Help!! I am having problems with my home desktop, which is an Apple IMac. Last Thursday morning when I turned it on I got my username and password entered but then the progress bar to boot the system up just stopped. I tried turning it off and restarting it but the same thing happened. I called the Apple techs and we went through several diagnostic tests. This tech tells me I need to buy more RAM so he gives me the product numbers and what to order. Since my device is 6 years old Apple no longer sold the parts, but AMAZON did. So I ordered the parts to the tune of $140 and got them yesterday. They were installed but that did not solve the problem. When I turn the computer on I can get no further than the progress bar which will stop. Another 3 hours on the phone with the techs last night, more diagnostic "tests", re-downloaded the operating system and this did not work either. With both techs I inquired as to whether or not this was a common problem- having an IMac suddenly stop like this. Neither one of them would answer me.

6 year old computer. Yes. Especially a Mac as they tend to outlive themselves.

Any stoppage during startup is an indication of either a BIOS process failing or a communication error that cannot be resolved. BIOS startups are notorious for lacking in failover procedures. If you are able to boot from removable media (CD/DVD or flash drive) that would be my first go-to. After that, attempt to restore to a previous safe startup. If those fail, flashing the BIOS and/or reinstalling the iOS.
Also viruses, trojan horse and hijack proof.

More RAM is not the correct diagnosis. You may have “failing” RAM, but certainly don’t need more.
Do an SMC and PRAM reset first - just google that.
If that fails to get you working the above poster is correct you will need to reload the operating system.
Speaking of computer problems - this time, Windows.
I have Win 7, and I hate...hate...HATE...the “LIBRARY” system. I can’t find $h/+ without extensive searching.
I seem to see the same folders/files in several locations.
What happened to the good ol’ “Folders and Files” system...I like it MUCH better.
I’d try partitioning the hard drive before doing anything else.
You forgot to have half of your brain removed. Try it again after that and you’ll love it.
They gave bad advice that probably made you spend money you didn’t need to. Since it’s 6 years old it may have come with a OS DVD.
1. Start the Mac and insert the DVD.
2. cut the power and start it hold the C key or option key and have it boot from the DVD.
3. Run disk tools and repair the hard drive and permissions.
4. if that doesn’t fix it you will probably have to re-install the OS
If you don’t have System DVD try booting in safe mode (look it up) sometimes doing that alone will fix the problem and the next boot will be normal.
