Police hunt gunman who killed motorist on I-95 in Boca Raton

An unknown gunman killed a man driving a sports car early Wednesday on Interstate 95, but it remained unclear whether shooter was a random sniper.

The gunman had not been found late Wednesday. Police released few details about the crime, except to say they believe Edvin Milkevic, 29, of Boca Raton, was shot while driving on the highway.

A Florida Highway Patrol trooper at a nighttime paving job on I-95 heard a crash near the Yamato Road exit about 4:30 a.m. The black Nissan 370 Z had hit a construction barrel and drove up the west side of the grassy swale on the west side of the highway. The trooper found Milkevic bleeding inside the car, said Boca Raton police spokesman Mark Economou.

Milkevic died at Delray Medical Center. The highway was closed for four hours during the morning rush hour as police investigated.

“We do know the individual was shot in the vehicle and where that took place, we don’t know,” Economou said. “Shots could have come from outside [the car].”

Milkevic had been a lawyer in his native Lithuania until coming to the United States 10 years ago and had worked at Pasta and … Ristorante Italiano in Margate as an assistant manager for “five, six or seven years,” according to the restaurant’s owner, Luigi Marenco.

He said Milkevic worked at the restaurant on Tuesday and would have closed up about 10:30 p.m.

“This is really incredible, because he was a really good boy,” said Marenco, who was on his way to offer condolences to Milkevic’s parents on Wednesday afternoon. “He was a good worker, a good guy.”

The restaurant was closed Wednesday. A note on the door said the restaurant would be closed until further notice, “We had an emergency and are sorry for any inconvenience.”

An assistant manager in a restaurant driving a 370Z?
Granted the family might have money, or,it may be an especially lucrative restaurant, but I’d at least be giving a cursory look to the young man’s finances.

My wife and I purchased a new 350Z in 2008 and we are very middle class.

I did not see mention of the year of the vehicle. A 370Z is not necessarily a rare or expensive vehicle. There might be something there, but a 370Z is not in itself anything to cause me to raise an eyebrow.

"...Nissan 370Z...the young man’s finances..."

A basic model for that vehicle starts at about $29K.

No, it’s not an exotic supercar, and yes, young people may go into hock to drive nice cars. A middle class couple (two incomes) is one thing, but it does seem a bit upscale to me for a restaurant assistant manager. If its an older Z he bought used, sure. If he has a couple jobs and lives with his parents? Sure. If it’s newer and tricked out and other aspect of his lifestyle seem a bit extravagant? Maybe not. Like I said, at least something that deserves at least a cursory glance.

"...cursory glance..."

My preference is law enforcement concentrate on finding murderers who shoot at people on public highways rather than determining why someone can afford a car.

Finding murderers is often done, at least in part, by establishing motive.

If he is living "beyond his means" (like a lot of DC politicians on a mere $170K in a very high-cost environment) finding out why can lead to a reason for the killing (drug dealer disagreement, for example) which may lead to a suspect. To not take a quick look at that factor would be remiss.

There are two killers on the loose in south Florida and the media in this part of the state is concentrating more on bashing Trump than reporting on these savages.

Miami Beach saw a murder of a guy walking with his girlfriend. One Tyrone Jackson is the suspected triggerman. And then there was this murder on I-95 a couple days ago.
