Olympics viewership is down, even as NBC pays more for the rights to air it

If recent trends continue, it’ll only get worse.

...

NBC* paid $963 million for the rights to air the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, a 24 percent jump over the $775 million it paid for the last Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

...

Viewership declines aren’t really surprising, as similar trends have unfolded across the TV landscape and viewers opt for on-demand and online entertainment alternatives. Even football and the Super Bowl — considered the last holdouts where advertisers could guarantee huge live audiences would be watching — are not immune.

I won’t say I’m boycotting but with all the insults coming from athletes directed at the President and Vice President...I’m just not interested.

The Olympics have gotten political like most other sports.

They’ll never learn (or care) how off-putting that is.

Already I understand some black athlete is angry that, of all things, a flip of a coin awarded a white athlete the opportunity to carry Old Glory.

C ya!

Maybe if they offered a wider range of feeds that are open for all, I would tune in.

Even with Direct TV it’s very difficult to find events to watch.

If it’s your thing, fine. But I’m not interested in figure skating.

Yep...yep...this needs consideration. PGKDAN is onto something. Sniff this out, but with all of these athletes wanting to politicize this, and draw attention to Pence and his attitude towards a dictators sister. WHY can’t we all keep our political views out of the ARENAS of Sports. Just play...let’s have a good time, in spite of who likes or dislikes Trump.. Whew... Can someone repeat thiswith a different tone?

Olympics lost their special status when they went from a combined Olympics every four years, to every two. IMO

Yeh, with the insults coming from the athletes, the libs own it - let them watch it. Kind of like the NFL.

Perhaps the IOC should start webcasting its own events, rather than relying on NBC to broadcast them. The need to shoehorn the coverage of the events around the network’s existing schedule is a problem. If viewers could choose to stream the events as they happen, or at a time of their own choosing, it would probably increase viewership.

The Gay dude dissing Pence, Tigers ex Whor..(they deserved each other)Lindsey Vonn dissing Trump... If no one is watching good luck with the endorsements Snowflakes.

The olympics are in trouble, I’ve heard, in that, fewer and fewer places are even placing bids to host future olympics.

There’s a certain amount of money, graft, etc. surrounding the olympics. But the money could dry up, if nobody in the world wants to pay enormous amounts of money to host the games, and if TV networks such as NBC take a financial bath on the games. If ratings drop, NBC could easily lose money here.
