The English language is shattering India's caste system

We can tell illegals till the cows come home that learning English is the real path to assimilation and upward mobility and all we hear is that diversity is "strength" or maybe that we have yanqui imperialista racist prejudices.

But over in India, we are seeing that idea coming to life.

Quartz has a long and utterly fascinating piece by Sajith Pai, titled "India has a new caste for native English speakers only,' describing how English is not only a great skill to have in the global economy, and a path upward in a big striving country such as India, something we all recognize here, too, it's positively trashing India's dreadful caste system and creating a new class of people who speak almost exclusively English, by choice. Pai writes:

Unlike Anglo-Indians, the original English-speaking community in India, who were Christians, Indo-Anglians comprise all religions, though Hindus dominate. Indo-Anglians are also a highly urban lot; concentrated in the top seven large cities of India (Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Kolkata) with a smattering across the smaller towns in the hills and in Goa.

Within these cities, they are clustered in certain pockets: Gurgaon, and parts of south Delhi, south Bombay and Western Suburbs from Bandra to Andheri, Indiranagar, Koramangala and gated communities in Bangalore’s outer ring road—Sarjapur, Koregaon Park—Kalyaninagar, Gachibowli and HiTech City etc. They fall well within the top 1% of India economically and have a consumption basket that is comparable to their middle-class counterparts abroad. Their kids go to International schools and have ‘first-world yoga names’ such as Aryan, Kabir, Kyra, Shanaya, Tia etc 2.

An Indian friend of mine recently married an Indian girl. At the wedding, virtually everyone from India was strongly fluent in English. Plus they played a video of friends and family from her hometown sharing their congratulations. Only one required translation.

She came to the US for the first time ever a week prior to the wedding. Her English is stellar.

Might have a lot to do with all the outsourcing companies do to those areas. A previous employer of mine had all the transactional accounting performed in Mumbai and Pune. They had to speak English in order to communicated with our clients. However, they speaks the Queen’s English which Created some issues because the phrasing is very different from American English.

India is de-balkanizing while the US is splintering into 10000 balkanized islands.

Oh, c’mon, the Leftard “multiculturalists” tell us that English is evillll and everyone should be as Balkanized as possible in separate language and cultural cul-de-sacs.

Anyway, isn’t this just another form of “cultural appropriation” and by what right do these “untouchables” think they should be allowed to speak English and advance their opportunities in life???

Yep, Indians use British idioms (i.e. "Come again ?" instead of "What did you say ?") as well.

Indians massacre and slaughter the Queen’s English. Mostly due to a revolting accent and pronunciation.

Few if any ever consider the parallels between the United States experience and the Indian one. Both were colonies until it became unbearable. The Great Revolt of 1855 represented a great burst within the country which expressed the oppression they felt under the English. I guess, that’s the point. We both felt the English oppression intolerable.

Modern times: If an Indian untouchable can save up rupees, learn English, groom properly, get an education and join the world economy, I’m all for it!

The same must be true in Pakistan, at least in the few non-Muslin or “moderate Muslin” (yes, I know you define a “moderate Muslin” as someone who has run out of bullets or whose gun jammed) families.

My friend’s son married a Pakistan young woman whose family are all Baptist and only the parents are not very fluent in English!

The couple (he’s American) live in the U.S. currently but she is college educated and soon hopes to apply for permission to work here, though she’d never been out of Pakistan until her marriage

I would rate “moderate muslims” a little higher, they are people who say what they must say to their brethren to avoid coming under suspicion. Islam is the Dark Knight. Literally. Suddenly it is clear that one day they will attack us militarily. In the old days, say 1960s, it was the Arabs that people were concernced about, not the concept of “islam”

The Sepoy rebellion was initially Muzzis going Jihad. There was some spread to the Hindoo, but it was largely a Muzzi operation.

Many Englishmen would say the same about Americans - who cares? One the strengths which give the English language its power and make it so widespread is its flexibility and openness to change. If it were still the Queen's English, no one would be speaking it except the Queen and few other inbred members of the nobility.

I have dinner out once a week on Saturday at a local Mexican restaurant. I take a corner seat, quietly listening to everything around me. The waiters and bartenders are fluent in English; it is the patrons I am worried about. These brain dead yuppies use the word “like” every third word in a conversation. Drives me nuts as they are illiterate in their own language.

I don’t agree, but who cares. It has long been noted that Indians speaking English sound a lot like Welsh speaking English. To my ears they both have a certain musicality.
