Five injured in teen's rampage at Granite Hills (17 years ago hero stopped school shooter)
San Diego Union Tribune ^ | 3/23/2001 | Jeff McDonald

This time, the bloodshed was at Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, half a dozen miles south of the Santee high school where two were killed and 13 wounded in a shooting spree less than three weeks ago.

Only one of yesterday's shooting victims suffered serious injuries.

The student accused of opening fire, 18-year-old Jason Hoffman, was shot twice, once in the face and once in the buttock.

All of the injured are expected to recover, including the accused gunman. Hoffman was taken to a hospital in handcuffs after being shot by an El Cajon police officer who was on campus when the shooting began. -snip-

He also was armed with a .22-caliber handgun and ammunition he did not use, police said. It was not clear where Hoffman obtained the weapons. However, District Attorney Paul Pfingst said early indications are that, as in the Santana High School shooting, the guns came from the suspect's home.

Authorities said search warrants were being prepared last night.

As Hoffman approached the building, he was verbally confronted by dean of students Dan Barnes. But the shooter eluded Barnes and ran toward the school administration office, randomly firing into windows and a doorway.

Inside the office was Richard Agundez Jr., an El Cajon policeman who works as the school's resource officer. Agundez chased Hoffman, students said. During a running gunfight, Hoffman was struck twice.

Agundez, a 20-year veteran of the department, was described as a lifesaver.

"Rich is an outstanding police officer and he was a real hero this afternoon," El Cajon Police Chief James Davis said.

I wanted to post a reminder of the importance of an armed, brave, police officer in preventing a fatalities due to a school shooting.

This incident occurred 17 years ago. I remember several threads posted on FreeRepublic.com about this shooting incident at Granite Hills in El Cajon, however I couldn't find any of the threads using this site's search.

The shooting incident at Granite Hills High School in El Cajon occurred only a few weeks after a shooting with two fatalities occurred at nearby Santana High School in Santee, California.

Officer Richard Agundez Jr.'s actions in quickly stopping the shooter prevented any fatalities from occurring at Granite Hills High School in El Cajon.

Also recall the recent brutal church massacre in Texas, where the citizen who lived nearby ran home, grabbed his gun, and shot the shooter in the leg causing the suspect to flee the church. The suspect was later found dead in his vehicle.

Wow, what a hero, running toward the gun. Shocking how Broward County performed in contrast. Cowering behind vehicles waiting for orders.

I remember this incident. It’s an example of how a good guy with a gun stops a bad guy with a gun.

Interesting that this was not copied by high schools all over the country. Some fine people would have survived their high school years had they done so.

I agree with you. If all schools had armed, competent, policeman, there would be many fewer fatalities at schools.

I just saw an article posted here on FreeRepublic that the NEA (National Education Association) is against armed personnel at schools.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I was thinking of posting that comment about Pulse Club shooting somewhere else on FR.
Anyway, I thought the new thinking was the first LEO on site was supposed to go in an engage the shooter.
BTW - Scott Peterson apparently was able to give an accurate description of the attacker. Doesn’t that mean he was pretty close to him?

Remember the cops blew a hole in the wall of the bathroom?
Did you see all the bullet holes on the outside of the building? I wonder how many people got hit with friendly fire?

Liberals hate people like this.

But then, I could have stopped at just “Liberals hate.”

Yet, it is frustrating to see liberals answer the question of "why not arm school personnel" with platitudes i.e. "the solution to the gun problem shouldn't be more guns". PC is a detriment to the thought process and just makes us dumber.
