Atkins, keto... same thing I believe.

If you go keto, your liver (the center of your metabolism) goes from metabolizing carbs into blood sugar and also into fat once the insulin rises to metabolizing fats into keystones, which does not trigger insulin. Much of the body’s metabolism is the same on serum glucose or ketones but a significant portion of the krebs cycle is changed. But the lack of insulin (or the need for it) on a keto diet is exactly why it seems to make sense.

The weigh loss part if this article is pointless. You lose weight as a byproduct of not having insulin constantly telling your body to convert blood sugar to fat stores.

Exactly.

The hype over this is ridiculous. I know a guy and his wife with whom we all engaged the Atkins thing when it was popular, long before I got my health back and wrote my books.

He’s doing Keto and raving about it, oblivious that it’s no different than Atkins. He WILL plateau, and he WILL see his health go to crap...again.

Atkins/Keto is not healthful, though I will not argue that it has a therapeutic aspect if used to transition a lifestyle.

“Diet” et all are all 4-letter words in my book (literally and figuratively).

I should really finish the article about this which I began after being told that he was on Keto...

It is different from Atkins, in that protein is limited. Atkins originally let people eat all the protein they wanted.

Also, Atkins allowed increase in carbs as the diet progressed. The keto diet is tailored to only the amount of carbs that will keep you in dietary ketosis. For some people who are severely obese, have pre-diabetes, metabolic syndrome, other illnesses, only total 20 carbs a day are suggested.

Younger people with healthy metabolisms can eat a few more carbs, but these are to come from above ground veggies and maybe a few berries.

The remainder of your calories will come from “good fats”. These are ghee, coconut oil, olive oil, butter, bacon fat, tallow, lard - mostly put animal fats.

Dr. Eric Westman has many really good videos on youtube that explain all the research and results of the keto diet - some very technical, and some for the layperson.
