Winchester 380 95 grain Hollow Point vs Federal 380 Hydra-Shok 90 grain
vanity | 3-2-2018 | kjam22

Posted on 03/02/2018 1:38:05 PM PST by kjam22

Just looking for advice. Purchased a new 380 S&W. Not owned 380 before and trying to decide best round for "when you need it." Not sure I'm smart enough to really know the differences between the two mentioned in the title. (Obviously one is 95 and the other 90 grain) But I would appreciate any advice and specifics on the differences.

Thanks much!

Hope I'm getting this posted to chit chat....

After seeing real world results, the scariest thing I thought was having a load of Hydra-Shock and having my gun taken from me.

Hard to imagine surviving getting hit with a Hydra-Shock

Seriously though. I’m considering a new Beretta 84FS (for fun)...13 + 1 in .380. I’m interested in this too.

I wouldn’t mind having one of those also. I just don’t want to start from scratch with a new caliber.

I have no personal knowledge but the hydra-shoks have a good reputation.

I would make certain whichever one you pick, it reliable.

Heavier bullets tend to penetrate deeper than lighter ones. Not that 5 grains will make all that much difference. I’d recommend that you get 100 of each cartridge (yes that’s expensive) and fire all of them through your pistol.

What you’re testing for is reliabilityand accuracy. Either load will be fine for self defense purposes, but reliability is of paramount importance.

If you get any failures to feed reliably don’t use that ammunition.

Make sense?

20 Federal hydra shok costs more than 50 Winchester hollow points. Just curious if it was really cost effective?

Either one is good.

Try each and see if either one causes any feeding problems in your weapon.

Decide from there

This article is a little long in the tooth now, but is still good advice. Bottom line for his testing: Any load using the Hornaday XTP bullet.

The Hydra-Shok did well, too. I'm using Gold Dot in a Glock 42.

Hornady 90 gr. Critical Defense is what you want.

I ended up with Hydra-Shok after researching on Youtube.

As others will point out it is very important to make sure that your gun will cycle them properly.
