Advice on buying a economy Camcorder (novice on specs etc.)
Amazon ^ | Thu, 03/08/18 | daniel1212

Posted on 03/08/2018 5:06:21 PM PST by daniel1212

I am at the point where I am somewhat prayerfully looking a getting should have a camcorder (though I am still without a cell phone which some can be controlled by). But while I have narrowed down the candidates to 5 (plus a Action Camera in case that would be viable). I am looking for one with the best sharp resolution (color quality is not that important) which would be used outsides as well as in, but I have little idea what the specs mean.

I see specs such as 720p, or 1920 x 1080P, or 1920x1080 FHD @15fps, 1280x720 HD, as well as Resolution:6000x4500(24M),5120x3840(20M),4608x3472(16M) plus CMOS: 1.3Mega pixels, max 16.0Mega pixels, or 5.1Mega pixels CMOS sensor(16MP Interpolation), and then 3.0 TFT LCD screen.

I am leaning to the SUNLEA or the LINNSE, while I put the action camera in there since i wondered if that could be used.

I do not want to waste money, and this would be a substantial purchase for such a thing, and so I thought I would ask advice from some FReepers. So below is what i see on Amazon, and thanks for any advice.

Go on craigslist and buy a used Canon point-and-shoot for $20.

Point and shoot cameras record video and everything these days.

720 is standard high definition Television broadcast these days, sports programs, etc. 1020 X 1920 is very high quality HD for home, though if you have any thought of editing, you will need a high end graphic computer to do it. For shoot and plug into your TV should be fine. Stay away from 4K unless you have 4K TV.

Sorry to say, your info is about 10 years out of date.

It is hard to buy anything but a tiny TV in 720P, and 4K is rapidly becoming mainstream.

That being said, even if you target 1080P TVs for viewing, 4K is still good to use for recording. Then, since you have extra resolution, you can shoot with a wider lens setting, and use that excess resolution as "buffer" that stabilization features in video editing software can use to "soak up" any un-smooth movement when filming.

720 TVs may be small, but that is the broadcast standard today. Keep in mind they are using $50,000 cameras with $30,000 lenses to broadcast that picture. Have you ever edited HD footage in a standard, run of the mill computer?

I use my IPhone to take videos. It fits my needs. I think it kind of depends on how serious you are about videos. A smart phone may not work for you, but it works for me. 📱

You realize a new iPhone 7+ will do 4K images? I got rid of my cameras years ago because the last several generation of iPhones took better pictures than even my very expensive cameras. Just upgrade your phone if you don’t already have one.

I have a GP 5 and am impressed with it.

It sits in the truck console most of the time, I’ve used it seriously two or three times.

My GH4 doesn’t see much use these days either.

I have a few things going on and playing with the cameras simply hasn’t happened.

NBC and CBS use 1080x1920 but I agree 4k is overkill, especially since it looks like he has a $60 budget and he’d need a hundred dollar memory card to be big and fast enough to be useful for 4k.

Funny thing, you can do some basic video editing on 1080p video on a $200 phone.

Yes, I have edited 1080p on my phone too, but it is limited. I use a high end graphics desk top for all other editing.

Thanks. That is the type of advice I was looking for. This PC has a 4-core 4.2ghz cpu with 16 ram, but cheap video card.
