For about a month, fallout from a dog attack in Cypress Park has disrupted the upper Westside neighborhood with a barrage of fliers, Nextdoor commentary and legal maneuvering by pet owners’ attorneys.

Stories vary about what happened 8:15 p.m. Jan. 25 on the 500 block of Western Drive. There were two dogs and a woman. All three of them had dog bites and the woman’s wounds were the most severe. One of the dogs, belonging to the Assistant County Counsel David Nefouse, had broken free of its leash.

That much is clear.

Now, Martha Burton’s left leg is healing after she said Nefouse’s dog knocked her down, bit the back of her left leg twice and dragged her into plants while she was walking Jack, her 16-pound Jack Russell terrier, near her home on the 100 block of Cypress Park.

“I felt this hot, searing pain down my entire leg and I was smashing it on its head with my retractable leash,” Burton said. “I was lying on my left side. Then, it went to my calf. I was screaming. All the neighborhood dogs were going crazy.”

The dog eventually let her go as she lay in the yard with six punctures bleeding through her pants, she said.

Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter investigators first interviewed Burton and Nefouse on Jan. 26. Nefouse told authorities he was out of town when Scout, his Jindo-Shiba Inu mix, crossed Western Drive and attacked Burton’s dog. He also said the animals did not get along, according to county documents.

Burton told investigators she never had problems with Scout before the attack, according to county documents.

She said she does not want Scout to be euthanized.

Scout’s dog handler told authorities the two dogs fought and, “in the chaos,”

Any idiot dog getting nasty with me or near my wife or kids will be lucky to have any teeth left when I’m done kicking it in the face repeatedly
Really big or multiple ? I’ll shoot em dead. No hesistatiion
Dog owners who have vicious dogs and don’t control them should go to jail
Or at least end up with a dead dog

My mom (RIP) got bit in the face by a dog when she was a child (back in the 20’s). She was up at our cabin, and they figured she touched the normally friendly dog (a German Shepard) where a bullet had been lodged in the dog for years. The owner of the dog killed it as soon as my mom was taken away.

There was a doctor up at a nearby resort and they laid mom out on a table and he stitched her face up. He got her to stop bleeding and saved her life - and pretty amazing the scars weren't all that noticeable.

No. You give the dog colloidal silver, and it will leave you alone. Just like that.

Female patient: And I was standing with my back to him and here he was, this little dog, who bit me - right - here! [pointing at ankle] Dentist: You're rather fortunate that it wasn't a Newfoundland dog that bit you.
