A U. S. Navy F/A-18 fighter jet crashed in the water on the property of Naval Air Station Key West late Wednesday afternoon.

At around 4:30 p.m., one pilot ejected from the jet, according to Adam Linhardt, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokesman. It’s unclear if there were one or two crewmembers in the plane.

I think the Super Hornet is a two-seater. And the electronic warfare version (replaced the EA-6B).

I’m in Marco Island and I felt 2 jolts of massive air on our sliders at about that time separated by a couple seconds. Had to be a massive blast to cause that.

We camped at Boyd’s campground in Key West last year. The campground is right across the water and in line with the air station runway. We loved watching the planes all day long. Mr. RightField said it might be noisy, but it’s the sound of freedom and the view is awesome.

Aww, Hell... Not good news.

From the days of canvas-covered biplanes to supersonic jets... still on a wing and a prayer.

God bless the pilot, hope he ejected OK.

Apparently it was a two-seater:

Local news said it was a 2 seater and both crew ejected safely but were take to hospital for checkup. The Navy 2 seater was probably a Growler.

If you felt something on Marco Island, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t due to a jet crashing in Key West. Trust me.

Lots of people felt it here. It apparently made sonic boom just before.

Has anyone checked to see if the pilot has close relatives named “McCain”?

(Posted AFTER the report that the crew is ok)

I think the E/F models dropped the ‘A’ part of the Fighter-Attack designator. So if the report is right, and it was an F/A-18, it would be a single-seater. But reporters get these details wrong all the time.

F/A-18C and F/A-18E are single seaters. F/A-18D and F/A-18F are two seaters. EA-18G is two seater as well. Looks like both ejected, hopefully safely.
