Athletics is one of the few places in academia where merit trumps identity - the won/loss record doesn’t lie. If they make her head coach, and she does better than her predecessors, good for her; if she doesn’t, eventually she’ll be replaced (probably with some hesitation, because that’s when all the identity politics baggage will come into play).
