Historic loss shows Virginia was built to fail in March

History made, and the greatest choke in basketball history now on its ledger, it is time to deconstruct the towering fraud that is Virginia basketball. A series of March collapses reached the ultimate low Friday night, when Tony Bennett’s Virginia Cavaliers — the No. 1 team in America, the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament, the alleged apotheosis of a distinct basketball philosophy — lost to No. 16 seed UMBC. It is the first time a No. 1 seed has ever lost to a No. 16 seed, since the tourney expanded to 64 teams in 1985. The 1-16 upset has long been considered one of the final frontiers in sports. The truly impossible upset. And it has been perpetrated by a commuter school from the America East upon the leafy upper-crust Atlantic Coast Conference enclave founded by Thomas Jefferson.

UVa is a well tuned machine that shuts down when one throws some sand into it.

UVA has a long history of choking.

See “The Ralph Sampson Era.”

This is truly a record that cannot be broken—by definition.

The highest rated team in the tournament was defeated by the lowest rated team.

Stunning....

The irony is UVa made the Final 4 the year after Sampson left.

The NCAA tracks rens of millions of brackets from several big sources. Every one of those brackets is busted now.

The problem for UVa was the loss of their best player in D'Andre Hunter. As such, UVa played out of sync and they ended up losing.

No....the loss has more to do with Bennett’s bad philosophy of muck-it-up, play great defense only, and hope your opponent doesn’t get on fire. Virginia is dead last in nation #351 in possession per game so they don’t have the kind of offense to catch up if the other team gets hot. In today’s game, you have to have players (playmakers) that can get you buckets really fast if need be

The similarities are stunning.

Polls, the press, the public knew who the winner would be even before the first shot was taken, even before the first vote was cast. There is no way either of these upsets just happened

Robert Mueller will add another chapter to his Russian collusion investigation. Trump must have colluded with Putin to have thrown the game. UVA is a liberal institution in a liberal state Putin and Trump cannot be allowed to attack America like this

I knew I heard Russian accents when the UMBC players were interviewed after the game. Maxine Waters will soon call for a Congressional investigation. It is another reason Trump must be impeached!

Around here Thursday morning on the drive time radio, they were promoting the availability of first and second round tickets. Yes, easy to get same day tickets.

Looks like the popularity of college BlasketBall is fading.

The popularity for paying exorbitant prices for sports events may be going down but it is not fading for the college sport and games like this only increases the popularity of the tournament and college basketball. Awesome to see kids who had been overlooked by the big schools get a chance in the spot light and do well. Nice job to the kids at UMBC! 👍🏼

It’s over, this idea that Virginia can win in March with devout defense and dawdling tempo and an offense prone to breaking down at the worst possible time. It’s over when a team that can only play one way, at one speed, is forced into a game that is not of its choosing — coming from behind, playing more quickly, dealing with actual pressure and expectation. It’s over, when you want to be a heavyweight but have a glass jaw and will panic at the slightest provocation.

I think he's going a bit overboard here. UVa only lost twice prior to last night, and had many quality wins including over tournament teams UNC, Clemson, and Duke.

I put this loss on Bennett as they were obviously unready to play and did not take UMBC seriously.

Further, UMBC played way over their heads, bombing threes and out hustling UVa.

And yes, my bracket is busted. I could survive Arizona going out as I had them losing in the Sweet Sixteen.... to Virginia!

That regional is now Kentucky's to win.

It was the end of the tournament for me. And I had been so looking forward to it. My daughter's plans to go to the Final Four are gone. Devastating!

I even thought they could overcome the injury to Hunter.

It is useful to recall that they were tied at halftime. Raftery suggested that they need to extend the defense in the second half to better defend the three point shots, and unfortunately Tony Bennett thought the same thing. But three point hits have a way of falling off early unatural success. While UVa extended the defense, UMBC killed them with easy layups in the second half. And that was the end,

Chaminade was a Division II team, no? In that sense, that was a bigger upset. Of course, the UMBC game had much bigger stakes.
