Harley Davidson LiveWire Project (Jay Leno's Garage)

A road test of an electric powered Harley. I can see more market for an electric motorcycle for short commutes than I can an electric car

What will be the range after they add the 3000 watt obnoxious sound delivery system?

Does the system include that signature Harley straight pipes sound?

Waking the neighbors at 1 AM is half the fun

My Grandpa courted Grandma in a bull-cart. A little messy, but the recharging was pretty cheap. For short hauls that’ll do.

It will be earbuds. 300 MW. Man gets to feel manly and neighbors can keep sleeping. No hounds barking either.

Even though I think electric cars are idiotic, electric motorcycles could work. Power pack trade ins at gas stations. 50 lb or so. Guy pulls up, pops his “tank” and pulls the batteries. Walks in and lays it on the counter. Clerk points to where to put it. No core charge. Guy pays for the energy and a little wear only. He puts in his ear buds and is vrooming down the road.

Winter kills electric cars. We are animals that need to keep warm. Battery tech has not come to the level of keeping us warm. That simple. Your 240 mile car will go 80 miles with the heater on.

I agree the range is an issue.

Perhaps, the issue.

I would I change the styling so that it looks less like a sports bike and instead looks like something for doing errands on the weekend or slepping back and forth to work. A rack for a briefcase, a windscreen maybe panniers to allow you to carry a bit.

Bicycle commuters have very different looking bikes than racer guys. I would think motorcycle riders might have the same vibe. My Triathlon bike weighs 17 pounds with 23-millimeter tires, the errand bicycle weighs 32 pounds, including racks, fenders and such, with heavier wheels that mount 40-millimeter tires. It also has a much more upright riding position and lower gearing. Different machines for different things. One is for going 27 mph the other for 17 mph.

When I was in Bermuda, I learned that visitors may not rent a car - at least, not a traditional car. All that was available were 50cc motor scooters or - only recently - mini electric cars.

In particular, Renault Twizys.

I am a very sensible man. Change your overhead pump lighting to led. Use the savings to recharge packs. It is idiot proof. Not even Obama could screw something like this up but I am sure as sh!t he would try.

Want one. That thing is as cute as a hell. Looks like a golf cart mated with a June bug. Imagine going golfing in one and it starts raining. Bet you could get to the 19th hole first.

It is kind of a neat looking motorcycle. But it seems unlikely that it will catch on.

I believe that electric powered scooters, bicycles and motorcycles make more sense than electric cars. I put an 800w “Golden” brand electric hub motor on a bicycle. It was a good quality item and worked quite well. 800 watts is approximately 1 horsepower which is more than even professional cyclists can put out for extended periods of time. With the battery pack that I installed it would do approximately 30 mph for about an hour. It cost just pennies to recharge. This is faster than legal store bought electric bikes will go and mine cost a fraction of the price along with a little elbow grease.

Even though it cost very little to operate... it did not fit my needs and I ended up selling it for significantly more than I had into it. I made enough money that I considered putting more of them together and selling them as a side business.

The “3000 watt obnoxious sound delivery system” is the amplifier in my trunk, driving quad speakers and a subwoofer.

Wake the neighbors?

Pfffft...I wake the dead.

:D

Mr. Leno is a very nice guy. Met him last weekend, as he walked into the Burbank, CA place where I was having lunch with a couple of buddies. He was driving his 1918 Pierce Arrow Model 66, the very one he featured on his show. He very graciously spent 15 or 20 minutes showing the car, lifting the hood, sharing it’s history. It was a cool car, and he was the most normal guy you’d ever want to meet. Car nut extraordinaire. Love the passion.

LOL! Harley riders are already deaf! They just enjoy the looks on the faces of other drivers and old ladies waiting at the bus stop.

“When are we getting a self driving motor cycle?”

Mine took me home many a night.

It sometimes parked itself in the bar at closing!
