Suburbanizing History: Northern Virginia’s Identity Crisis
American Conservative ^ | March 21, 2018 | Casey Chalk

Strangers I meet are always surprised when they discover they’ve met a third-generation Northern Virginian. “Wow, a native!” they exclaim, “you don’t meet many of those!” This surprise is often accompanied by a strong opinion about NoVA, as it’s often called—they suggest that the area just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. has little regional identity or unique culture, or little worthy of praise. It’s quite a bracing commentary to hear about one’s home. Yet I contend that whatever deficit in cultural identity NoVA may have has been accrued by the technocratic elite that has come to dominate the DC metropolitan area.

It was not that long ago that Northern Virginia was solidly Southern in character and mood. The roads and schools make that clear: the former have names like Jefferson Davis Memorial Highway, Lee-Jackson Memorial Highway; of the latter there are high schools named after native Virginians Robert E. Lee and Thomas Jefferson. There was even a JEB Stuart High School, until last year when it was renamed “Justice High School” by the Fairfax County School Board. It’s easy to forget that the great 2000 football flick Remember the Titans is about T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, which was racially integrated in 1971. My mother’s alma mater, West Springfield, sported one of the teams the Titans demolished in that epic season.

When I was a kid in the 70s the family would drive down I-95 to FL. The Woodrow Wilson bridge was the marker splitting North from South culturally. That is not longer the case as NoVa (Northern Virginia) is as much a part of the Northeast Corridor as any other high density suburb, for example, Northern NJ.

Until the George W. Bush administration, Virginia was low crime, Republican and English speaking.

The destruction of NOVA was a direct result of the refusal to enforce laws and borders.

Immigration!

Obliterating America, one county at a time...

Ain’t it great?

My ancestors were in VA in 1683, traveled down the road from Staten Island...why did VA need any new “residents” now?

We all know why: get rid of the Americans by overwhelming them with aliens.

The security apparatus Bush the Younger installed after 9-11 was a major magnet for outsiders to move to NoVA.

I’m a Midwestern yankee, now living in the liberal cesspool of Maryland with a deep abiding respect for the southern culture.

Traveling to NOVA deeply sickens me when I realize the legacy they have squandered.

You can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a Civil War battlefield yet the area is deep blue northern.

Our daughter lives in the other enclave of insanity, Charlottesville. She’s one of three known conservatives in the city.

Sounds like California around 1995-2000.

Few more years and you will be hearing calls to kick VA out of the Union. At least from from Freepers.

I don’t think even Lincoln himself would have countenanced this total destruction of the southern (ie American) culture. What’s happening is more like what Hitler and Stalin did to poor Poland.

#8; "I don’t think even Lincoln himself would have countenanced this total destruction of the southern (ie American) culture."

The worst enemy the South ever had was John Wilkes Booth. He was a jackass who brought a wave of vindictiveness upon the South that still hasn't receded.

Lincoln was not vindictive. He planned to resettle former slaves to their homelands. He bore no animosity toward the South. He would have healed this country.

I went to JEB Stuart HS. The drive to Fairfax was a gravel road from Annandale west. The Springfield I95/495 interchange was cow pasture where we would ride minibikes.
We moved away in 2001 and to go back, 17 years later, is like visiting a different world. Glad my kids aren’t growing up there.

I went to Mclean HS.

The area is now another country.

Sad to see.

I long to leave but I don’t know where to go.

Particularly annoying since I can go. Work is mobile.

It’s really evident every time I go to the mall. Most of the people there are foreigners.

My son lives and works in Arlington. He refuses to have a long commute. But he lives in several different countries. None of them the USA.

I see what you did there.

Some places in America seem like different countries.

Many here can’t stand the National Park Service (with some justification) and want to see it eliminated. I have to stick up for the NPS however because if it were’nt for them there would be almost no preservation of Civil War battlefields in Virginia and other places. The states have historically had little interest in preserving large battlefield areas. Virginia was one of the worst.

Grew up in Forestville - name later changed to Great Falls - in a tenant house on a farm. Now nothing but multi-million dollar homes there.
It was over-paid lobbyists and gov’t employees that destroyed; not immigrants

Illegal aliens and bureaucrats...what’s the difference?

Both criminals

"The area is now another country."

It's many other countries. In one sense though, that was ok. We moved to Yorktown, VA and it's hard to find good Chinese food here. Or Thai, or German... In the NOVA burbs there were excellent restaurants from all over the world! I liked that Afghani place in Falls Church City.

We lived in the City of Falls Church (which I refer to as the slums of Mclean) and at Christmas we would go to Tyson's Corner and start circling the parking lot in ever widening arcs looking for a spot. Usually we could find one back in our driveway!
