Glory Days Again, At Last — Loyola Of Chicago's All-Time Basketball Greats

This year, the early rounds of the NCAA men’s college basketball tournament served up even more upsets than usual, or so it seemed. Consequently, the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 featured too many uninspiring matchups and, frankly, mediocre games. The main exception was the Kansas-Duke clash — a game for the ages.

Fortunately, a good Final Four field has emerged. It features Villanova (second place in the Big East regular season and champion of its tournament); Kansas (the Big Twelve regular season and tournament champ); Loyola of Chicago (the Missouri Valley regular season and tournament champ); and Michigan (fourth place in the Big Ten but winner of its tournament). Villanova and Kansas are number one seeds and Michigan is a three. Loyola was seeded eleven, but should have been considerably higher.

I remember Alfrederick Hughes as a scoring machine during the mid-80s. He lead Loyola to the Sweet 16 in 1985 where they lost to Patrick Ewing's Georgetown tram. I believe he lead the nation in scoring that year. Mr. Hughes was a 1st round pick but was a bust. Loyola was the opponent of the Mississippi State team that snuck out of the state violating a court injunction to play Loyola at Michigan's State place during the 1962 NCAA tournament.

Loyola reminds me of Drake University’s 1969 final four team. They took Lew Alcindor (then) and UCLA to the wire in game one and then beat North Carolina in game two (back when they had a consolation game). I’ll be cheering for you until you play the Jayhawks (hopefully).

Yep remember they used to have the consolation game?

Remember the NFL playoffs bowl, played between teams which had lost in the first round of the playoffs? I recall Vince Lombardi hated that game.......
