Horse meat ban praised by animal-rights activists, but it’s only temporary

WASHINGTON — Horse meat production won’t resume in the U.S. anytime soon, a victory for animal-rights advocates under the spending bill signed last week by President Donald Trump.

The $1.3 trillion spending deal, which funds the government through September, renewed the country’s horse slaughter ban. Just months ago, animal-rights activists feared the ban could be in jeopardy.

The measure includes language that prohibits the U.S. Department of Agriculture from spending money on inspecting horse slaughter facilities. Without inspections, horse slaughter plants can’t operate, so they’ll remain closed as they have for more than a decade.

“I think we’re all kind of shocked that the bill turned out as well as it did,” said Nancy Blaney, government affairs director for the Animal Welfare Institute. “We were expecting so many bad possibilities.”

Animal-rights activists, who say the slaughtering of horses is an inhumane way to dispose of unwanted animals, were worried in July after the House Appropriations Committee approved an agriculture spending bill that would lift the ban that has been in place since 2006. The full House then ratified that shift in policy.

Horse meat is consumed in several countries, including Mexico, Japan, France and Belgium, but there’s no market for it in the U.S. Two of the three U.S. slaughterhouses serving the export market before the 2006 ban were in North Texas, in Kaufman and Fort Worth. Racing against the clock

A temporary ban on horse slaughter was set to expire Friday, until it was inserted into the budget. Congress had passed similar language every year since 2005, but in 2011, lawmakers dropped the ban from its annual USDA budget. Animal-rights groups fought successfully in court in 2013 to block slaughterhouses from reopening, and Congress reinstated the inspector ban in 2014.

My wife likes horsemeat and I’ve never had the opportunity to try it.

One of the strangest things I ever ate in my years in Japan was horse-meat sushi. I swear I am not making that up. It didn’t taste like chicken.

Silly. A victory the animal “rights” nuts over sanity. Meat is meat—and instead of just wasting old or lame horses after euthanization—they could be used, even if just for dog food.

Ridiculous.

What makes horses so special? Yes, they are one of the smarter animals in the animal kingdom, but so are squid, octopus, pigeons, sheep, and pigs, and there is no law that keeps those animals off the dinner plate.

Yes, they are one of the smarter animals in the animal kingdom,

Not even close.

Horses, even among other equines, ride the short bus.

Which is why they were ridden into war. You try to ride a donkey into battle and he is going to high tail it in the opposite direction. HIS momma didn't raise the dumb ones.

But you were asking what the difference is. It is the movie industry. How many movies are there out there where the horse is the star or at least in a strong supporting role?

How many movies are there out there where the cow is the star?

There you go.

If horses aren’t slaughtered like any other livestock, how am I going to get my custom Wesco boots made? I’ve been saving for those for years.

I have a friend who used to own a purebred Tennessee Walking horse and rode dressage. He said something once about having to sell his horse. I remarked how awful I guess you really miss him. My friend turned to me and said “its just livestock”. :-)

Reminds me of the age old question: ‘Why are there always more horses a$$es than there are horses?”

Ah, so instead of the humane end, for whatever fashion they will end up, what will happen to these beasts now? Abused? Starved and neglected?

Understood, but I grew up near “Elsie the Cow” and so cows have a special place in my heart (and stomach). For what its worth, this poll ranks horses at No. 15 on the smarts list: https://list25.com/25-most-intelligent-animals-on-earth/3/

#1: "Meat is meat."

Indeed it is. Horses are livestock. We eat livestock.

I've had many occasions to enjoy horse meat, and it is very tasty. A horse meat pot roast is delicious.

It's just the cycle of life. One year you're winning the Triple-Crown, the next year you're on my dinner plate.

But they've got to develop a better marketing campaign. Maybe refer to it as filet de cheval (or filly de cheval, LOL).

Bovines are smarter than horses. Oxen won’t allow themselves to be worked to death like the horse in GWTW.

A farmer was overcome with carbon monoxide inside his barn. A cow butted her way through the closed doors & nudged & rolled him toward fresh air where he revived.

(She would live out her days)
