BUCHAREST, Romania – Romanian police have questioned seven U.S. Navy sailors based in Romania over an altercation in a bar and fined five of them.

Police spokeswoman Mihaela Gird says officers were called after the sailors left a bar in southern Romania where they allegedly refused to pay for drinks early Sunday.

Gird said Monday that the Americans "were noisy, and measures were taken to calm the tense situation."

These are sailors involved, not Marines(naval infantry). I left the headline as original.

I would think these sailors would have been warned about how to act in a corrupt former eastern bloc nation. Because of this all the other sailors will likely have to put up with more liberty restrictions.

In fairness to Fox News, this is an Associated Press story they reprinted. The AP, not Fox News mixed up sailors and Marines. Which is not surprising coming from AP.

As for the story, five sailors getting drunk in a bar and having a dispute with the bar owner is news? When I was on my first enlistment in the Army, we called that Friday night.

I guess what surprises me is that they put themselves in this situation. When I was in this type of stuff did happen but things have changed in regard to how liberty is conducted. Before you can even go out you have to have a major briefing on how to act and how not to act and what may or may not happen in the area you are in and what to watch out for. Liberty is much more structured and restrictive then it was when I was in. It used to be sign out and grab a liberty card and condom on your way out.

Paying that bar tab is a great way to avoid trouble, whether in Romania or Rochester, NY.

Do as the Romanians do, its not hard. I plan on going to Romania into Bucharest later this year for a week and from my research Romania seems like a place friendly to Foreigners as long as your not some Jihadi or anything like it, seems like a nice place too.

I'm sure they don't mean to be out of order or anything.

When I was in Zumwalt did away with liberty cards. Has the Navy brought them back?

He also did away with Cinderella Liberty.

I was in the Marine Infantry. They love to require you to have a liberty card. We even had to adhere to the "buddy system" which meant you were not allowed off base by yourself. We had week night Cinderella liberty and 2 am on weekends. I routinely ignored this B.S. If you did get a liberty card you were supposed to check out and check in with your buddy. Of course this created problems.

The majority of the Marine Corps did not have to deal with this silliness. I got out after 4 years. I could not lateral move into another MOS because mine was "short". More B.S.

I have been told that US Sailors are no longer allowed to go on liberty the way they used to...everything is an organized group you have to go with...

Don’t know if that is true, but that sound like sucky liberty.

Sounds like they have to adhere to the same B.S. I had to while in the Marine infantry during the 80’s.

I’ve been to Romania twice; it’s a great place to visit, and the people are generally pro-American.

I agree with your post.

But in some restaurants and bars, there is a tendency to add things to your bill.

Eat a pretzel from the rack on the table? Add $10.

Used the ketchup? Add $2.

The menu says beers are $4. But that was an old menu. Now it is $7.

I’ve experienced that stuff many times in Eastern European and Baltic countries.

Romania is the origin of European sex trade. Porn, prostitution etc. Not Bangkok but the next best thing. Along with that comes the victimization of drinking spectators and participants. Just like here.

Want to avoid being ripped off by a B-girl or a bar owner? Stay on the base and watch a Bob Hope movie.

I know back in the Seventies when I was in, the USN simply stopped going to Greece because IIRC four or five sailors were murdered on a bus on liberty.

Now I am told you have to sign up to go ashore anywhere. What the heck fun would that be?

“This story has been corrected to show seven U.S. sailors were involved, not Marines.”

We know Marines would NEVER do THAT!

“Because of this all the other sailors will likely have to put up with more liberty restrictions.”....

In my day in the U.S. Navy, we too suffered the same fate caused by those who seemed compelled to “over indulge”. In the ‘old days”, all Navy personnel we warned prior to liberty to avoid certain areas, represent our country in a civil manner, etc. etc. It didn’t seem to work then either.
