How to Delete not Deactivate your Facebook Account
04-05-2018 | Mw

Deletion is not Deactivation. Facebook makes it difficult to locate the Account Deletion settings. Many Web searches also use the term delete but lead you to the deactivate settings.

Login to your Facebook account, then click on this link which will bring you to the Delete Account page.

It’s a placebo delete, anyway.

It’s a placebo delete, anyway.

That delete button does not connect directly to the DB to delete the record.

All the delete button really does is to flag the account 'deleted'. It does not delete the underlying data.

In case my previous post wasn't clear, I agree with you.

Why bother? Facebook is great, and neither they, nor Cambridge, nor Disney, P&B, Unilever or anyone else who scraped user data did ANYTHING wrong.

I deleted my account a couple of years ago.

Before doing so, I updated the following to bogus values:

- email address
- DOB (wasn’t accurate anyway, but I changed it to be “off” by about 10 years)
- profile photo and background
- education background
- location information

I also deleted all photos and posts, but as others have mentioned, they are likely still in the fb databases.

They may still have my old email, dob, etc, but changing them does add a layer of obscurity to the current record.

Wonder if the placebo delete will meet the new requirements of the EU GDPR law...

I started out with a dummy email account I use just for such things. I never use it for real. And I had a pseudonym for a name. Never uploaded any pictures of myself. Used a false DOB and place...................

Yep. There may be a marketable business plan in a FB like service that guarantees you can delete all your data, at any time.

A FaceBook with Bleach Bit type of affair.

Just rewrite a fantasy fb profile. Enter a hometown thats real and you have never been to.
Same with the high school.
Add pics taken from the web of local events or join a local whine and gripe group.
You can search out local celebrity names say from a lical tv station or names that post on their comments group and send friends requests.
Just spoof the living daylight’s out of it.

So in actuality, you’d be better off to go in....change the real data to fake data...rather than deleting?

Anything in there is see-able to someone. If you log into another system using your Facebook account, they have access to everything even if you have it hidden.

Only if they're not storing changes in a log file somewhere, or keeping sequential back-ups of the DB.
