North Carolina beachgoer captures drone footage of Civil War-era shipwreck

While vacationing at Holden Beach in North Carolina last week, 42-year-old Brent Garlington spotted what is thought to be a wrecked Civil War-era steamer.

Garlington, of Fayetteville, flew a drone over the Lockwood Folly Inlet, which is located between Holden Beach and Oak Island.

The tide was low because of the full moon, Garlington told Fox News on Tuesday. This prompted him to take a walk on the beach sandbar and ultimately capture the footage using a drone.

While Garlington didn’t discover the vessel, he believes "this is the first time it has been seen from this perspective."

A representative from the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) later identified the steamer in the footage as BENDIGO, "a side-wheel, iron hulled blockade runner lost in Lockwood's Folly Inlet," Michele Walker, the department's public information officer, told Fox News in an email.

She said that two other vessels -- the runner ELIZABETH and the Union warship IRON AGE -- are also lost in the inlet. All three wrecks have been "well-known since the 1960s" and are "occasionally uncover[ed] due to active depositional sediment transport in the inlet," she added.

Separately, in 2016, researchers with the North Carolina DNCR found a submerged Civil War-era steamer which is “believed to possibly be the remains of one of three blockade runners used to penetrate the wall of Union naval vessels blocking the port of Wilmington during the Civil War,” the organization said at the time.

Oh Yes, the "First time ever" phrase. Everyone needs to think they are the first timers for so many things. I guess that has been restricted FAA airspace and no has EVER flown over the ship wreck. Give me a break.

Perhaps he meant from a drone’s perspective, hovering directly above, as opposed to speeding by in an airplane.

See if you can find any photos from a hovering helicopter or prior drone. Or, maybe better, underwater photos or video.

At some point, I plan to get a drone and take the training class.

The local tech college offers training sometimes.

"occasionally uncover[ed] due to active depositional sediment transport in the inlet,"

Bureaucracy speak for a full moon, outgoing low tide.

Maybe, but how’s the surface water look with 150mph+ “winds” blowing down on it?

Thanks ETL. Looks like this topic has stirred up a hornet's nest of hostility toward drones.

I have been really aching for one. Technology has driven down the price where a fully equipped (vid, nvg or thermal) can be gotten for around 2 grand. We used different types of drones in our SAR. Everything from a flying wing to 4 props. The flying wing cost 50K with all the software and hardware....

One would think the ship would be a nautical hazard, especially at night, and marked with a lighted buoy.....

I have a Go Pro 5 that I rarely use.

As pricey as flight schools are, drone flying might be as far as I get.

Familiar territory.
A buddy dinged it up with his prop one time when it was just under the surface where it "normally" sits. It's right on the Holden Beach side of the inlet, IIRC.
There's lots of old boat skeletons in the area. d:^)

Re: Drone vs Bald Faced Hornets

Lol!

I wonder how many hornets were downed by the drone’s blades.

You probably also so the related vids, apparently using drones against hornets/wasps/yellowjackets is a popular sport now. :^)
