FAIRBANKS—A Fairbanks man critically shot a pit bull in Aurora Subdivision on Wednesday evening after it attacked another dog being walked by two girls.

The pit bull was shot twice in the head and later euthanized by a veterinarian, according to Fairbanks police officer Doug Welborn.

The 12- and 16-year-old girls were walking their rat terrier on the 2000 block of Bridgewater Drive when the attack happened. The girls were not injured, but the pit bull's owner was bitten while trying to stop the attack, according to Welborn.

Vern Woods, 80, told the Daily News-Miner he was home watching TV when he saw the two girls come out of their house with their dog on a leash. They crossed to Woods' side of the street and were taking pictures when the pit bull "came out of nowhere at a dead run." . . .

Two head shots and the dog was still alive? What was the guy using, a Red Ryder?

“The pit bull’s owner was clearly distraught about his dog being shot, according to Woods...”He’s apologizing to the dog, calling it by the name and telling him he was sorry,” Woods said. “I would have thought he would turn his attention to the kids or the kids’ dad and then worry about the dog, but he took it and just disappeared before I even had a chance to call the police.”

There you have it, folks.

The article only says pistol, which means it could very well be a .38, especially if one considers the hand strength of an 80 yo man. Even a .22.

One of the traits of the pit bull type dog is the “block-head” skull. So a head shot might not quite do it quickly.

“Why the steady pit bull fetish here.”

I’ve been wondering if pit bulls are really that much worse than other dogs, or if the news I’m getting creates a false impression.

One can’t deny that there are a lot of stories about pit bull attacks. More even than Rottweilers or Dobermans.

“Why the steady pit bull fetish here.”

Interesting question. I began to research the issue some time ago for reasons of my own, and the more I looked, the more I found, and the larger the subject became.

Not to overlooks that the man exposed himself to danger. That dog was out of control, it seems.

Two head shots and the dog was later euthanized?

Must have been using a .25

I wondered that, too, in the beginning. I don’t wonder anymore, but the bigger question is what to do about it. And I do not know yet.

Forgot about that, yes, possibly. But you have to realize that this was the 80 year old neighbor that shot the attacking dog, saving the girls and their father from continuing attack.

Why the steady pit bull fetish here.

I was in Maryland 2 weeks ago to pick up a truck I bought, upon arrival and stretching out at the marina where the truck was out of nowhere a Pit jumped on my 13 year old Jack Russell and was immediately kicked off my dog by my friend who was with me before it could bite my dog.

My dog has been attacked 2 times in his life both by a Pit Bull, I don’t trust them for 2 seconds!

All breeds bite, some more often the Pit Bulls. But with other breeds it's almost always a warning to back off, get away from my food/toy/puppies/owner. Victims are usually not seriously injured and walk away with a couple red marks or puncture wounds. Pit Bulls don't just bite, they attack with intent to kill and don't let go until they succeed or are stopped by force. That doesn't really apply in this story, since the "victim" was a small dog, and pretty much any larger breed could have attacked it with similar intent to kill.

I do not hate pit bulls. But they are are a part of a larger problem.

I have lived with or shared office space with: Golden Retrievers, Great Danes (one office was the dogs’) , Old English Sheep Dogs, Australian Sheep Dogs (blue merle) German Shepherds, Corgis, dauchsunds - 4 in one office, Labs of all types, papillions, pomeranians, Newfoundlands, Scotties, Chihuahuas, and cats, ferrets, birds, and reptiles of all types and sizes. And one pitbull, briefly. Have not lived with Rotties, but friends have had them.

I've known three pit bulls in the neighborhood. One was a rescued female, adopted by a daughter. When the daughter left for college, the parents were in charge—although they already had three other pets. One, a young, fixed, female Maltese was killed by the pit bull, which was then euthanized. One other male pit bull next door lived a short, but uneventful life. (It basically lived for its tennis ball). It was replaced by another female pit bull, described by the owner as "a good dog". It lives quietly with three other dogs—the smallest of which is, at 15 pounds, "the leader".

Pit bulls are canine versions of second-generation followers of Mohammed.

Love socialized pits and cats. In fact love all animals.

A badly raised dog is as bad if not worse than a badly raised human. At least you can kick the badly raised cats ass. A pit out of nowhere... good luck unless you are CCW.

"shot twice in the head and later euthanized"

Didn't know they were so hard to kill.
