Halsey Taylor is one of the leading manufacturers of drinking fountains today. Company founder Halsey W. Taylor invented the non-squirting drinking fountain. In 1896, Taylor's father died from typhoid fever. This illness is principally spread through contaminated drinking water. Several years later, while working as a plant superintendent for the Packard Motor Car Company, Taylor realized numerous workers were becoming sick with dysentery. He believed contaminated drinking water was the chief reason for the spreading illness.

Taylor determined to develop a drinking fountain that was sanitary and would not contribute to the spreading of various illnesses. By 1912, he had developed a drinking fountain that he claimed was much more sanitary. He began to manufacture the drinking fountains at his hometown of Warren, Ohio. Taylor continued to improve his product, and during World War I, he invented the "Double Bubbler" drinking fountain. This fountain dispensed two streams of water in an arc. Previously, drinkers commonly had to place their mouths on or near the faucet, helping spread germs. With Taylor's drinking faucet, the arc of water allowed drinkers to be several inches away from the faucet, reducing the spread of illnesses.

With the invention of the Double Bubbler, demand soared for Taylor's drinking fountains. During the 1920s and 1930s, Taylor's company, which was named Halsey Taylor, manufactured more than eighty percent of the drinking fountains in the United States. Halsey Taylor continues to manufacture fountains today, although the company is now located in Oak Brook, Illinois.

There’s one at my workplace. I’m there a lot on weekends doing projects, and my dog goes in with me. I taught her how to jump up, press the bar, and get a drink.

Good fun.
Then one day she was at the office when other people were there. Of course, she walks right over, jumps up and gets a drink in front of the germophobes. I said “how in the world did she figure THAT out?”, knowing I was busted.

Instead everyone marveled at how she must have learned it from watching people and started in on how smart dogs really are.

I just agreed.

When they really should have been thinking:

And it’s totally true. If that dog ever develops the ability to talk, a lot of my world could come crashing down.

Back in the old days. They drank a weak beer all day. The water was so questionable.

One of my 2 labs has an uncanny ability to read me. If I’m thinking about going to the kitchen for a snack, she often gets up and heads for the kitchen before I make a move. Same with going for a ride.

She also figured out how to unlatch a gate, so now I have a padlock on it. She hasn’t figured that one out yet, but I’m sure she’s working on it.

So true your statement. I tell my dogs lots of things. They listen and do not speak back. Dogs are good therapy and a lot cheaper than a shrink.

I have a dog that looks at me and starts opening and closing is mouth as if he was talking. He hasn’t figured out how to put the mouth and voice together for the words. I imagine, if he did, I would be shocked at what came out.
