I’ve always wanted to go. If my siblings and I could come up with a theme for an installation or space, we’d probably do it. I remember seeing videos of it from before 2000. When it was “small” by comparison then. Looked like a heck of a fun time. Loved the ethos of what you bring in you carry back out. I here that “glamping” and leaving trash is changing its character, however. Not to mention the dude who got past barriers and personnel to be one with the burning man.

Ya – black rock city now has a population of 70 K, some of which just don’t get it, they are called “tourist” by hardcore burners

Anyway, the feds (BLM land btw) charge BM org $3.2 million for the conditional use permit, one of the conditions of the permit is to leave the desert in “nearly pristine” condition. It takes volunteers about 2 -3 weeks to sweep the 5 sq mile area and remove all traces. If you went out there today I don’t think you would be able to tell anyone was ever there. I heard “tourist” left 4000 bikes behind for the 2017 event. I guess that’s not too bad considering out of a total of 60 to 70K bikes. Still sucks

But the culture is in somewhat in danger due plug and play (turn key camps), bros, frat boys and hipsters, but it still a great event, got my tickets and vehicle pass, going again in 2018.

I’ve heard of it, but have no idea what it is.

I checked it out and there is a lot there. It affirmed what I already know: Hipsters ruin everything. When I first move down here to New Orleans we had hippies. Gradually they morphed into hipsters. Hippies walked. Hipsters ride their silly retro bikes around with that smug look on their faces. Hippies were always smiling.

Thinking about it hippies were generally happy, the hipsters always look irritated.

“I’ve heard of it, but have no idea what it is.”

It’s a drunken desert orgy masquerading as a festival of sorts.

All my life I’ve felt like I was too late to the party; the hippies, Bob Dylan, Woodstock, the yippies, dope, disco, Miles Davis going electric, Willie Nelson’s outlaw thing, Punk and New Wave, the East Village Art Scene, and now I’m reminded that I missed this too.

I was the tail-end of the baby boom and the orchard was picked clean. I had to wear my older brother’s hand-me-downs. I was always too young or too broke, and now I’m too old.

My only consolation is I’ve still got just enough brain to console myself with. As much as I would have loved to been there in it’s earlier days, I know I wouldn’t have had enough sense to appreciate it and then go back home.

I hear ya. Born on the trailing edge of the Boomers. On the bleeding edge of the X’ers. Too young for the Boomer fun. Too old for the X’er fun. The oldest and youngest seem to be working together to turn the US into the next dystopian “workers paradise.” They’ll probably get closer to it than anyone else to it, but it’s already creaking under the weight of debt.

Nicely put. As a mid-range Boomer I can only answer with the price to be paid for the cutting edge, and it isn't hard to find examples. Timothy Leary toasted his brain - he was still a highly intelligent man to the end but the acid left indelible and unmistakable damage. Consider the respective fates of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Or the living heroin-corpse that was Chet Baker. Not pretty. The ones who escaped suicide by drugs and aged gracefully will remind us that it can be done: Dylan, for one, Jagger and Clapton perhaps, but that's all a reflection of what can be salvaged when the youth departs and the romance wears off.

The 27 club does not consist of happy people, or people that somehow found their way: Morrison, Joplin, Hendrix to name only three. These helped define an era and didn't live long enough within it to define themselves. Exemplars, yes, but hardly people to be emulated.

So yeah, good times maybe but not for everyone, although I wouldn't change a day of it in my personal case. But the signal failure of so many of my generation was the ridiculous pretense of deep knowledge achieved through hedonism and spiritual mumbo-jumbo instead of experience. There's no real knowledge there, only delusion and among the honest, disappointment. The only end state at 27 is death. Some of us, well, maybe we grew up a little.

Then there's Keith Richards, who will probably bury us all. ;-)

Proposed to my wife there in 05
During Katrina
Joan Baez singing amazing grace as New Orleans was going down
We camped 1.4 miles away from everyone by orange fence on way to the hot springs to the south
Was still loud. We got there on bikes obviously
Now. Kids. Will never return

Hipsters are prissy and take low dose acid

Just saying

Truly hipsters fetishize everything they like

20 dollar burgers

Their marijuana has to be perfect sativa or indica or the appropriate hybrid and organic or their silly gummies or shatter with 1000 dollar blown pipes

Tobacco vape pens that leave smoke like a mosquito truck fogger in the early 60s in Deep South ...DDT rox

Early 1900s LL Bean looking fashion...think the movie Lawless

Outdoor recreation.....

Suspenders

Bicycling in lycra

Eyeglasses ala Buddy Holly

Cheap old Honda 750/4s they turn into Norton Commando looking cafe retro bikes...

And wear goggles while riding them

Their beards.

Hipster women....were I young I’d lay the plowshare far and wide I can assure ya

They are cute as hell

But the guys are chinless no brow waif sissy looking dweebs

As a rule

So I'd still be better off doing 70,000 Tons of Metal some day.
