I did an Ixquick search, which uses Google, for information on Oregon Republican governor candidates. I got sites for democrats. I kept changing my search words but kept getting Kate Brown or democrat sites. I even put "Republican" in twice on each end of the search.
I knew Ixquick used Google but just hid your ID. Well, done with Ixquick.
+1 for DuckDuckGo
Google didn’t give you the correct search results but they did note that you’re a Republican.
They will keep the information forever.
I appreciate the heads up but Startpage/Ixquick is still good for finding images and keeping you out of the Google pile. Having said that; I added the duck to my Firefox browser and will keep it in mind for searches not showing what I think it should.
The James Damore incident made me go through every browser on every device in the house, and made Google NOT the default search. Duck on most.
Google has become trash anyway in the last few years, not the quality search they once were. Too much agenda, too much paid for garbage.
I was using Ixquick which is supposed to insulate you from Google. But they already know I’m Republican and a whole lot of other things they gather from other sites.
I switched from Startpage to DuckDuckGo a few months back. Very satisfied.
Went to Duckduckgo and got everything I was looking for.

I used start page and got plenty on info on republican candidates when I put in Oregon republican governor candidates.
So did Google when I tried searching, 17 candidates, yeah that’s gonna work. Say hello to your new Dem. Gov.
If you do not have a Google account and run your Internet connection through a VPN*, how does Google know who you are?
* Virtrual Private Network, I like Private Internet Access.
Ixquick just did something to their format in the last week that really sucks. Especially for image searches. Tried to fix it with ‘settings’ but nothing there helped.
Guess I’ll switch to DDG.

It makes it harder for them to track you fore sure.
Like you I use a secure VPN service. A private email account and Linux for my desktop. I’m sure the NSA knows everything I do. It hides me from the data brokers...
However I didn’t always use a secure VPN so I’m sure they have a pretty extensive profile on me any way.
The bigger problems are the smart phones. People download apps without understanding what they are doing.
FaceBook was tracking non-facebook users via their smartphone app that comes preloaded on most phones.
Or when your friends tag you picture on their facebook page. Then you end up in their facial recognition database.
Privacy is the civil rights issue of the 21st century. But 90+% of the people just don’t get it.
Without privacy you won’t have any freedom.

I, too, use Start Page even though it teamed up with google.
What I like about it, is it’s privacy policy found on their home page. Now, we all know they lie, but according to their stated policy, it is a very secure search engine.

I use DuckDuckGo as well. I ordered a pizza from Pizza Hut and then went to Lucianne.com which uses googleads. The page was covered with Pizza Hut ads. So Pizza Hut was being charged for views of ads while I was chomping on their pizza. It does not seem like very effective advertising. Do google advertisers know this?
I immediately went shopping for bikinis and lingerie. Much better view now.

Re smart phones: I have just recently gotten my FIRST cell phone. Been resisting all these years. But cell phones and cell phone service has gotten to be almost as inexpensive as my landline phone. So I figured, what the heck.
I have an Alcatel flip phone that won’t take downloaded apps so I don’t have that worry. I also have a Faraday cage wallet for my phone and keep it there most of the time. Phone cannot be reached while it’s in the cage so no tracking.
