His arm is buried near the spot of the field hospital in the family graveyard of the doctor who removed it.
May 2, 1863
The building that he died in at the field hospital still stands. It has been partially restored and is referred to at the Stonewall Jackson Shrine. The NPS own that portion of the old plantation.
That building is miles from the field hospital and the doctor’s family house and graveyard.
At the shrine there is a map that shows the ambulance route from the field hospital to that building at Guinea Station which they used as a hospital. Most of those roads are still in use and it is possible to retrace that route to the site of the field hospital, the house and the graveyard.
“I find Longstreet a better exemplar.”
I agree.
The Confederacy had the better generals. They cared about their troops and defending their homeland.
Many of the Union generals were careerists and political operatives angling for influence and approval from Congress and the press.
I don’t buy the notion that the Confederate general staff was driven by more noble motives than the Union staff. There were winners and losers in both camps. But the Southern generals were just better militarily, as a ... general! ... rule.
