Sixty-five percent of the eighth graders in American public schools in 2017 were not proficient in reading and 67 percent were not proficient in mathematics, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress test results released by the U.S. Department of Education.

The results are far worse for students enrolled in some urban districts.

Among the 27 large urban districts for which the Department of Education published 2017 NAEP test scores, the Detroit public schools had the lowest percentage of students who scored proficient or better in math and the lowest percentage who scored proficient or better in reading.

Only 5 percent of Detroit public-school eighth graders were proficient or better in math. Only 7 percent were proficient or better in reading.

In the Cleveland public schools, only 11 percent of eight graders were proficient or better in math and only 10 percent were proficient or better in reading.

In the Baltimore public schools, only 11 percent were proficient or better in math and only 13 percent were proficient or better in reading.

In the Fresno public schools, only 11 percent were proficient or better in math and only 14 percent were proficient or better in reading.

Among the states, Louisiana public elementary schools did the worst in teaching students math and New Mexico public elementary schools did the worst job teaching reading.

In the Louisiana public schools, only 19 percent of the eighth graders were proficient or better in math and only 25 percent were proficient or better in reading.

In the New Mexico public schools, only 24 percent were proficient or better in reading and only 20 percent were proficient or better in math.

This is what happens when the primary goal of the education cabal is to provide support to the Democrat Party.

Exactly, which is why Trump needs to allow DeVois to radically reform this mess.

Clearly, we need to reward this massive failure with higher pay.

I never looked at school as anything more than glorified day care, as I understand the political motivations of those who teach and especially those who run the schools. So these numbers never affected my kids, as all of their critical learning (i.e., math and reading) took place at home.

But I do feel sorry for the people who STILL think that our schools have the best interests of the children as their priority, as they are virtually always disappointed as they learn the truth, the hard way, at the expense of their kids.

Ever since Dewey, schools are not for spreading knowledge, but instead for promoting activism and indoctrination in order to initiate leftard changes in society.

In Oklahoma we just passed a $5K per year pay raise. I would have been OK with that if it came with an elimination of tenure so we could get rid of the teachers who are producing these results. We hired a bunch or teachers who are worth on average $42K per year. How exactly will giving the same people $47K per year improve our education system?

Absolutely criminal.

Decertify all teachers’ unions and close down the graduate schools of ed pronto. Phonics and traditional math education are the only way to go with the majority of students.

The best state is no higher than 50% proficiency in either math or reading.

The progressives’ plan to dumb down (and indoctrinate) our children has succeeded (look into John Dewey, The Frankfurt School).

Thank you! to (mostly female) pubic school teachers for all their NEA- and Democrat-led efforts on this!

God help America.

What a sad commentary. It seems that the public education system is actually victimizing the youth of our nation, in favor of supporting leftist ideologies and goals. And they will tell us that, if they had more money from us, they would do better.

Yet the local school district budget here, in one of the 119 school districts on Long Island will vote ,YES, on a 200 million dollar plus budget this year.. It is outrageous. Yes. 200 million!!!! Plus I believe NYS kicks in several million more. Mind boggling.. I vote no every year, but still these crazy budgets pass.
