Brake and speed induced oscillation were the limiting factors.

I was about 11 or 12 when I pegged my bike’s speedometer at 50 down a steep hill. The coaster brake was really hot when I finally got stopped.

There was a 9% 1.25 mile hill call “big susie’.
During the 70s, a couple of friends and I road out to it 6 miles away. My friend was on a 10 speed, I was on a Schwinn Stingray.
We started down the hill in shorts, tank tops and no protection whatsoever.
I buried my chin on the block connecting my fork to the handlebars.
My friend on the ten speed lifted his chest and the front wheel came off the ground, he recovered.
What a rush.

My old Schwinn Typhoon (one-speed, coaster brake) had a speedometer that went to 50. I pegged it down a steep hill when I was about 11, and the brake was practically smoking when I finally got stopped. A few years later, I might have gone faster than that on several occasions on my Peugeot 10-speed (which I still have after 46 years), but it didn’t have a speedometer. Nobody wore helmets back then, either.
I live near that highway. Tioga Pass (SR 120) heads west from Lee Vining, California on Highway 395 into Yosemite Park. It is a very narrow and winding road, not for the faint hearted.
