FULL TITLE: The rise of homeschooling in West Virginia, Crouse: 'I've seen a shift in how people view home school'

CHARLESTON — As all eyes turned to public education during the historic statewide teacher strike, more parents are choosing to pull their students out of school and educate them at home.

Enrolling a child in private school has traditionally been the most popular alternative to public school. But in recent years, data shows there has been a surge in the number of home-schooled students.

“I’ve seen a shift in how people view homeschool, for sure,” said Kathie Hess Crouse. “Just personally, I have seen that with a lot of my friends because I’m so open about how we homeschool. So many people think that public school is the only way to go until they meet someone who has actually homeschooled their kid.”

Crouse, who is a board member for the West Virginia Home Educator’s Association, is a homeschool evangelist. She said she was no different from most other parents who worried about pulling her children out of public school. Once she did, she could never imagine going back

Certainly is safer than sending your kids into the fish barrel at the local gun free shooting gallery.

Look how much money home-schoolers are saving the American taxpayers.

Public per student is somewhere around $10,000 per year per student.

Purchasing a homeschool program can be around $300 per year per student for materials.

Home school is better than handing innocents over to college graduates who voted for Hillary and have strange sexual beliefs.

I’ll admit I wasn’t on the homeschool bandwagon when our kids were in school. But, we were in a small conservative district. I’ve since changed my thinking and would bet come the fall, there will be a considerable number of students not returning to public school.

The big question will be if this new wave of homeschoolers will be subject to even more mind control being in a more closed environment. No, I’m not speaking of conservative families in this.

Snort, don’t count on your property tax bill lowering if a significant number of students don’t return to public school in the fall.

Could be. There are plenty of liberal homeschoolers. In fact, homeschooling actually first became popular with the lefty counterculture in the 60s.

I resell books online and homeschoolers often buy thr older teacher edition textbooks and they are great. The history and grammar books are so much better.

Keep “mainstreaming” dangerous students, and guess what will happen.

Liberals and politicians view people as sheep, and I guess quite a few are sheep.

Because he was there during school hours? Or because he asked you who was your favorite World War II German Field Marshall?

That’s for the first kid. After that, curriculum costs are almost free.

With four kids, I don’t think we ever spent more than $1500 a year total.

They are all graduated. The last couple years were practically free

I homeschooled my sons for a total of 10 years. On year our homeschool group went on a field trip to a history museum up in the local mountains. The group providing the tour has a great museum that students from many school districts use for a field trip.

The woman leading the tour was very impressed with the calm respectful behavior of the students. She wanted to know what school we were from. When we replied that we were homeschoolers, she was shocked. She was so impressed, that she invited us as a group to spend a future day on her property for the students to learn how to pan for gold.

Let’s hope the tide is turning with respect to attitudes to homeschooling and homeschooled children.

But be ready for the cultural marxists to go hysterical and try to put the hammer down.

We will prevail.

Good for you! We have had similar experiences! No pervs teaching our kids, and the agenda is not social engineering for marxists. My oldest daughter is now in medical school & my 16 year old boy has been accepted to Barry College for animal science, to much James Harriot?

Blessings!

No school at all is better than a public school these days. Yes . . . I paint with a broad brush. There may be exceptions, but they are rare.
