PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Circuit Court Judge John Olson issued his restitution opinion for the teenager who pleaded guilty to starting the Eagle Creek Fire last summer, ordering him to pay $36 million dollars.
The teen was in court on Thursday for a restitution hearing, where 11 different claims were submitted from different agencies and companies totaling $36 million. The teen's attorney argued the number was "cruel and unusual."
The judge said in his opinion that the judgment does not violate the constitution and "is clearly proportionate to the offense because it does not exceed the financial damages caused by the youth."
The Eagle Creek Fire started on Sept. 2, 2017 and burned 48,000 acres of forest land. The 15-year-old pleaded guilty to charges in February.
The court acknowledged the teen cannot pay the full judgment at once, let alone in his lifetime, so the Hood River Juvenile Department is working out an affordable sum and will create a payment plan.

He will have to deliver a whole bunch of pizzas to pay off that debt.
The interest is where they will really get him.
Not sure how things work there but he will most likely be in and out of jail for some time as a result of this debt.
I was thinking that as well. Where I live the judicial system has a bad habit of creating life time criminals out of juveniles who commit petty crimes.
So he was playing with fireworks and which in turn started a forest fire.
Child line stupidity and an accidentally started fire. I dont see this sticking permanently on a 15 year old.
In other news Oregon is a sanctuary state that will protect illegal Aliens whether they are murderous gang bangers or not. If the 15 year old was an illegal hed get off Scott free.
We all know that the laws are only meant for citizens. Commit a violent felony in California and the governor will pardon you if you are an illegal. A citizen? Suck it up buttercup. And make sure you have a valid drivers license, insurance and a valid registration because we only let illegals slid on that.
He’ll make up for it in volume.
Well, he should change his name to Ramon padilla or some stupid illegals’ name to get away from this..
That’s a lot of yards to mow.

I was going to make a joke, but student loans really are worse.
I know of a young man who is caught in this cycle ... well... he was. He has an aunt and uncle who’ve intervened in his life and are helping him stay up with the institutional debts. If he’s late on one payment he’s in violation of parole, put back in jail, charged for his time in the jail by the privatized jail, additionally fined and ultimately released to repeat the cycle.
That said I’m not sure I have a problem with any of that... the solution to his problem was my brother and his wife. Not changing the system. They are helping him to learn to make better decisions. Those that don’t have that in their life or reject that are destined to repeat their problems.
I’m not sure the cycle is the right one... but neither is letting these kids escape paying their fines and completing their sentence.
This kid had just been sentenced a life of slavery. With no possibility of ever gaining freedom. Hed be better off if they just hanged him
