Are We Headed Towards Another Deep Solar Minimum?
universetoday ^ | 22 May , 2018 | by David Dickinson

Have you been keeping an eye on Sol lately? One of the top astronomy stories for 2018 may be what’s not happening, and how inactive our host star has become.

The strange tale of Solar Cycle #24 is ending with an expected whimper: as of May 8th, the Earthward face of the Sun had been spotless for 73 out of 128 days thus far for 2018, or more than 57% of the time. This wasn’t entirely unexpected, as the solar minimum between solar cycle #23 and #24 saw 260 spotless days in 2009 – the most recorded in a single year since 1913. Cycle #24 got off to a late and sputtering start, and though it produced some whopper sunspots reminiscent of the Sol we knew and loved on 20th century cycles past, it was a chronic under-performer overall. Mid-2018 may see the end of cycle #24 and the start of Cycle #25… or will it?

… One thing’s for certain: if the current trend continues, with spotless days more the rule than the exception, we could be in for a deep profound solar minimum through the 2018 to 2020 season, the likes of which would be unprecedented in modern astronomy.

Fun fact: a similar dearth of sunspots was documented during the 1645-1715 period referred to as the Maunder Minimum. During this time, crops failed and the Thames River in London froze, making “frost fairs” along its frozen shores possible. Ironically, the Maunder Minimum also began just a few decades after the dawn of the age of telescopic astronomy. During this time, the idea of “spots on the Sun” was regulated to a controversial, and almost mythical status in mainstream astronomy.

Caused by globull warming, of course. And Trump.

Back firing the last transition I was running a thread hereabouts where I was posting daily solar weather figures no even charting them.

I was calling the coming minimum the Gore-Hansen Minimum.

Temperatures will lag behind the sun as heat is lost.

On the bright side, if a new ice age starts my brother and his family will have to move back from Canada eventually.

Since the late 1950s the solar cycles has been mostly in decline, unexceptional maximums, and long minimums. Those involved in high frequency radio communications such as ham radio operators or radio professionals have been well aware of the fact for years.

If we have another repeat of the Maunder Minimum, I hope people around the world starts to like eating wheat (and possibly corn) a lot. Mostly because longer winters means a drastic reduction in the production of rice, a staple food throughout much of the less-developed world.

Like the Time Magazine cover from the 1970s “Global Cooling.”

“Caused by global warming, of course. And Trump.”

LOL and then some!!!

And how in hell would anyone in the past (1645-1715 period referred to as the Maunder Minimum) theorize this? I suspect they did and I would like to know how. The past was way smarter than give we them credit for.

I love historical medicine. There was amazing brilliance there and a bit of luck. We have lost and gain a lot of knowledge.

Past needs to be respected.

Since President Trump was elected we have experienced a .5 C decline in worldwide temperatures, the sharpest decline in over 100 years.

https://realclimatescience.com/2018/05/earth-cooling-fastest-in-a-century-since-trump-took-office/

The two major factors responsible for the current decline in temperatures appear to be the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle and a weak solar cycle. Measured CO2 levels seem to have been shown repeatedly to have very little affect. It is somewhat amusing to have the leading measurement of “worldwide CO2” levels to come from Mauna Loa in Hawaii just a few miles from an active volcano.

The media coverage on “global warming” keeps doubling down on their pet theory despite the data going in an inconvenient direction for them.

Yes, I’m a ham and it peaked in the ‘60s and has continually dropped since. It’s bottomed out, and considering past trends, may stay that way for several cycles.

Many of these low-cycles correspond with heavy volcanic activity, which spew particulates into the atmosphere that further cool the earth. Furthermore, the rise in the ocean has stopped the last two years, and arctic ice, while not growing in area, has grown in depth exponentially. Things are changing, albeit slowly.

Cold kills a lot more than heat does.

You don’t have people at the equator selling everything to move to the arctic. You do have a lot more people going the other way, though.

Warmth is life. Not oven warmth, but don’t be an ass and take it out of context.

Wait-a-minute! Are you telling me that the SUN is responsible for the temperature of our planet - and NOT a trace gas like CO2?.

I mean, c’mon - the sun is over 93 MILLION miles away. How can it possibly have that much of an effect?
