When I was a boy, I used to point my binoculars at the moon and I would imagine seeing it populated with cities and farms.

I'm more sanguine about the prospects -- I'll guess that the first permanent human colony on the Moon will begin within five years; the first attempt at a permanent colonization of Mars will begin within ten years (but will fail).
