"For a long time the English were considered the strongest," he said, but they were no match for Russians with martial-arts training. "There were guys sitting there with a Birmingham banner and we went up to them. 'Either we're taking your banner or you stand up and fight for it.' The Birmingham guys decided they didn't need the banner that much."

The violence on Marseille's streets and in the stadium was greeted with jokes and even praise from some Russian lawmakers and officials. President Vladimir Putin called the fighting "sad," then questioned "how 200 Russian fans could beat up several thousand English," to laughter from his audience.

I would say this is ridiculous but then again, we see how some sports teams supporters here in the US act if their team wins the national championship. Burning cars, bonfires, excessive drinking, damaging property. Over a friggin’ game? Srsly? It’s not like they were actually playing the game.

I’m sure that the Russian hooligans aren’t NBA fans but I would like to invite them to whatever city wins the championship. And tell them they are fans of the team that lost.

The presence of hooligans in English football has been drastically scaled back. What these wannabe tough guys from Russia did was to take banners from normal everyday fans, not hooligans.

Not that it matters. Since the days I had too many fights as a kid, I’ve learned in life that, from a physical perspective, there is always someone out there who could beat you in a fight, and someone else who could beat them. If you have to fight to defend yourself or someone else, then you must. Anything else (e.g. sports) is just pointless stupidity.

You don’t know how many were on each side at any given time. I doubt that it was actually 200 vs. thousands in one go.

I'm not sure they would have much trouble.

While the civilian population of Great Britain sat on their Island during WWII the civilian Russian population was cold, hungry, tired and being pummeled.

The Russians are a tough people by nature. You get that way when your country has been invaded from every direction at one time of another. Explains their paranoia.
