Tractor-trailer slams into stopped traffic on I-15
The Victorville Daily Press ^ | May 30, 2018 | Staff Reports

A tractor-trailer traveling southbound on Interstate 15 slammed into the back of another tractor-trailer and Chevrolet pickup Tuesday night near Stoddard Wells Road after failing to yield to stopped traffic, according to a CHP news release.

At the time of the collision, which authorities say occurred at approximately 11:57 p.m., traffic was at a standstill due to a full-freeway closure for construction of the D Street Bridge.

As traffic was being routed off the freeway at Stoddard Wells Road, 52-year-old Mariano Valle, of Montclair, approached the stopped vehicles in a 2014 Freightliner tractor-trailer traveling at 60 mph. For unknown reasons, Valle failed to reduce his speed and crashed into the back of a 2019 International tractor trailer, driven by 26-year-old Aaron Goode, of Maricopa, Arizona.

The force of the collision pushed Goode’s tractor-trailer off to the right, and allowed Valle’s vehicle to continue forward and strike the back of a Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by Gardena resident Marco Torres, who was stopped in front of Goode. The pickup truck suffered only minor damage.

According to authorities, the collision caused Valle’s truck to catch fire, which was quickly extinguished. Valle sustained minor injuries from the collision and was airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center for treatment. No other injuries were reported.

Officials did not immediately believe alcohol or drugs to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation by the CHP Victorville Area office.

Anyone with information regarding the collision can call CHP at 760-241-1186.

a 2014 Freightliner tractor-trailer . . . a 2019 International tractor trailer . . . a Chevrolet pickup truck

That is unusually specific reporting.

From the novel, Collateral Crimes:

He slowed down and got ready to block the truck in with the car to keep it from turning around, but the truck didn’t stop at the crossing. It didn’t even slow down. It steered around a car waiting at the crossing and smashed through the gates, launching a burst of boards and splinters into the air. When it hit the slightly raised crossing, the tractor became airborne for a moment before crashing to the ground. A second later, it was the trailer’s turn to bounce, but before the rear axles returned to earth, the speeding train arrived. The locomotive barreled through the tail of the trailer, and the truck disappeared behind the train. The train’s brakes squealed but it kept rolling.

I bet the trucker was texting. I’ve seen tractors pulling doubles weaving across two lanes of interstate traffic. When I finally got beside him he had his phone in hand texting or watching something. He had been swerving for over 10 miles before I got beside, then past him.
Fed Ex double.....

Good thing he didn’t ram a car.

Been a long time since I made the bi-monthly trek from San Diego to Las Vegas. I wonder if that Denny’s is still up and running. We would stop there on the way up and on the way down.

Sometimes we would miss it on the way up and stop off at pike’s peak in Baker.

Having moved back to Texas, one thing I miss is the drive from Ventura County to Vegas. Pearblossom Highway, stop at Target in Victorville, stop at the Burger King at the big outlet mall farther along, look at the Early Man site signs, and drive past a few favorite landmarks on the way into Nevada, Ah, memories.

Here in Michigan, a year ago my friend and his wife were slowed down in a construction zone when they were rear ended by a pickup truck that never slowed down. My friend's wife was killed instantly and he suffered severe injuries.

Evidently the driver of the truck was distracted by something and didn't notice the slowed traffic ahead.....

Not for nothing but what is it with idiots driving pickup trucks? I travel 125 miles a day to work and these guys fly past me like I was standing still, in excess of 90 +

Unusual because double triples I have seen are more stable in lanes.

The Department of Un-Safety will next require driver facing cameras to prevent texting, monitored by authorities. The consequence of this will be more fatigued driving, because science says what you observe changes its behavior.

The higher fatigue and drowsiness will cause more accidents and kill more children. The State Safety authorities will just ignore the child deaths because they grabbed more control.

The Administrative State moves forward creating chaos out of nothing. Unelected, regulating, destroying.

Trucking is a dire industry, that is hyper regulated causing poor pay and poor working conditions. Back in the Liberty days, trucking was successful.

Yes the Big State shall progress their mess into mega mess.

And that my FReinds, is the Rant-Of-The-Day, thank you.

They're definitely not "working" trucks. They're nothing but be new, waxed "look at me" ego boosters. And there is never any stuff in the back bed, which always has a bed cover.

Growing up my step-dad had a real beat up "working" truck but then he was also a builder.......

Yeah... that immediately jumped out at me, too. Citing brand name and YOM is not just specific but also strange. Wonder what the DSM agenda is now?

He thought the truck had an autopilot feature, so we went to sleep.

Many of the pick-up trucks you see are used to tow a boat or RV. You can’t do that with your lil rice burner car.

I wonder how many of these accidents are caused by people looking down at their cell phones and not seeing that traffic had stopped?

I'll be honest. I've almost done it. Not by texting and driving, which I never do, but by trying to change the music selection, which really is just as bad.

Before I retired, I noticed that there were only two speeds for pickups in morning city rush hour - way too fast or way too slow. A small percent drove the speed of the general flow of traffic. I'm a pickup owner.

A couple years ago, my son was rear ended by a young man who didn’t slow down for stopped traffic. The kid’s dad paid my four times the worth of my son’s car. His kid was entering the Coast Guard the next week and wouldn’t be driving for quite a while.

Maybe their commute is 150 miles.

But seriously — yeah, you’re right. I never noticed till a recent move drastically expanded my commute, but the most reckless and oafish drivers I encounter are routinely at the wheel of a pickup.

It seems they’ve been doing these improvements to the I15 for a decade. The benefits last about two minutes before traffic catches up. The pass was shut down for hours Wednesday because of a crash; people refuse to slow down in the fog.

60 miles an hour and only minor injuries? I’m not buying the story.
