Pope to oil execs: Energy needs mustn’t destroy civilization

Pope Francis told leading oil executives Saturday that the transition to less-polluting energy sources “is a challenge of epochal proportions” and warned that satisfying the world’s energy needs “must not destroy civilization.”

The Vatican said Francis held a two-day conference with the executives as a follow-up to his encyclical three years ago that called on people to save the planet from climate change and other environmental ills.

Participants included the CEOs of Italian oil giant ENI, British Petroleum, ExxonMobil and Norway’s Statoil as well as scientists and managers of major investment funds. Their remarks on the first day of the closed-door conference were not released by the Vatican.

While Francis lauded the oil executives for embedding an assessment of climate change risks into their planning strategies, he also put them on notice for their “continued search for fossil fuel reserves,” 2½ years after the Paris climate accord “clearly urged keeping most fossil fuels underground.”

“Civilization requires energy, but energy must not destroy civilization,” he implored.

Energy experts and those who advocate fighting climate change expressed doubts before the conference that it would amount to anything other than a PR opportunity for the companies to burnish their image without making meaningful changes. …

Bergoglio knows as much about energy apparently as he does the Bible.

Do leaders of Catholicism even ever READ the scriptures?

I thought he was a preacher and a pastor, not an economist or business executive. How does he know more about the energy industry than the random person in the Buenos Aires phonebook? But he’s going to lecture people who’ve made that their life’s work and have been successful at it. Does he actually think that that industry wants to kill or injure their own customers?

Expanding sources of energy created civilization in the first place.

The coward anti-pope won’t fight pedophilia and evils instead he has to hide behind a crusade for “the planet”.

The availability of cheap, reliable electricity is absolutely necessary for the generation of real wealth and the alleviation of miserable poverty. The creation of real wealth correlates best with the degree of social justice found in any society. Without abundant cheap fossil fuels, electricity production would be curtailed and it would much more expensive. People will suffer. The Pope has a disdain for capitalism and should not be giving economic advice.

If he was really in the know, he’d understand that oil production and sales is one of the few things that is keeping civilization from destroying itself with war.

Sad so many people have to comment on things they know nothing about.

Don't conflate Pope Francis and his Peeps with all the "leaders of Catholicism."

i do get your point, though. Pope Conspicuous Humbleness seems to love gadding about with global power-brokers, saying stupid thing about public policy issues where his expertise is equal to a dull, earnest middle-schooler's, and in his spare time, supervising the controlled demolition of Catholicism.

Does the Vatican read FreeRepublic?

Thorium energy Pope, thorium energy. Will solve most of the world’s energy problems and pollution problems as well. End of story.

Got it? Now back to bringing lost souls to Christ...
