A woman has sued NASA, claiming to be the rightful owner of a small vial of moon dust supposedly given to her by Neil Armstrong.

The US under Barack Obama passed a law in 2012 that gives astronauts full ownership rights to artifacts collected during space missions.

Huh? The American taxpayer spent BILLIONS of dollars to send man to the moon and bring them back. Everything they brought back belongs to the American citizens, not the Astronauts and not Obama.

He can not give away artifacts anymore than he can give away stealth aircraft to pilots.

NASA, just let her keep it. I doubt it’s real, but she apparently considers it a family heirloom and memory of her father.

“Real or???? “”

The ???? is confusion - she has it and someone else wants it or what - we’re supposed to fill in the blanks?????

Why the lawsuit - who/what/when/where?

I have no problem as long as such a gift stays in the family or dominated for public display to a public institution but no sales for profit.

Me neither. My son has a patch that was certified by NASA to have flown into space on a shuttle mission.

If they want it back, they won’t need to go far. He works there.

You cannot dictate what some does with their property.

What I know is that all Americans paid billions to send man to the moon, and these astronauts were honored to be chosen. But they volunteered to go and what they returned with doesn’t belong to them. It belongs to all of us.

If your son has a Silver Snoopy, that is a lifetime accomplishment. Good on him. That flew on a shuttle mission and was handed to him by a shuttle astronaut. It is his to do with as he wishes, but it is a family heirloom.

I would say that they were untrusted not given. Therefore not the owner merely a trustee

Not sure what that is. He has a Boy Scout Robotics Merit badge patch certified flown in space
