Cost to fill in Cambria Cavern with concrete totals more than half a million dollars (TX sink hole)

In May, Williamson County Engineer Terron Evertson said it will take at least 200 trucks of concrete to fill the cave. Tim Kelley, who lives near Cambira Cavern, told CBS Austin he is looking forward to the cave being filled in. His driveway access has been blocked for months, making mundane tasks like grocery shopping a hassle. Although the County says the caves do not pose a risk to homeowners nearby, Kelley said the unknown still makes him a bit uneasy. "Even if there is a 5% chance (the cave) goes under my house, that's still a big deal to worry about," said Kelley.

Back in Feb., this sink hole opened up in a neighborhood.

This is what was found underneath it. Snort, they think 200 truckloads of cement is going to stop it.

Yep. When the forces of God and Nature take hold, our efforts can turn out to be puny and ineffective.

Turn it into a tourist attraction.

They could fill it with the town.

Put a proper reinforced cover and extended post below the cover into the hole, anchored it adequately to the sinkhole walls and sinkhole floor, and you could fill it will two trucks.

What in the Sam Hill? What bureaucrat estimated that?

That’s roughly 1,900 cubic yards of cement. Ah, I’d say somebody ought to go back and recalculate the volume for that rather large cave. By the way, the cost should be somewhere in the vicinity of $200,000 to $300,000. Not sure how they came up with over half a million unless there is significant additional engineering work needed.

But, man is killing the planet with CO2, and other “natural” gases, what do you mean God and nature have more power than we do? We’re the dominant lifeform, right?

Williamson Country already has a tourist cave - they found it when they were doing test drilling for I-35 construction decades ago. Most of the county is underlain by limestone and caves and sinkholes are all over the place. I’m surprised some enviro-weenies haven’t claimed a rare salamander lives in the cave so it cannot be filled.

sadly such a critter probably does,

when Man battles God and the Nature He created, we lose.

Just turn into an extension of the existing tourist cave.

They are at least ten miles apart, and this cave is in the middle of a subdivision, hence the need to fill it in. I live in the county in question, and there was extensive exploration of the karst topography, and we have greenbelts where there are potential sinkholes. I think this is an older development that did not undertake such exploration.
