Dad buys billboard for son after school won't recognize him as valedictorian

A dad from North Carolina bought his son a billboard to recognize him as class valedictorian since the school refused to do so. East Wake High in Wendell, North Carolina recently got rid of naming valedictorians and salutatorians. Instead, they give all high-achieving students Latin honors for a “better way to recognize students who may have barely missed being named valedictorian or salutatorian by several decimal places," according to the News & Observer.

Because everyone should get a participation ribbon.

"Josh Allmon graduated from East Wake High with a 5.31 GPA."
I didn't know GPAs went that high.

There’s absolutely nothing that liberals can’t screw up.

Nah, I’d only settle with a cute little plastic “gold” trophy (2-3” high) made in China (from US Toy!)

I dunno, I kinda like honoring ALL the high-achievers. This is the one and only time that I would support shared honors.

This is one of those situations where all parties are idiots. The school is full of BLEEP for their participation-trophy policy but the dad is out of control (my opinion).

GPA’s are a joke these days...

Long ago were the 4.0 was perfect, now they get classes with higher numbers to bring up averages, etc etc...

The public school system as a whole is a joke.

GPA can go above 4 if the student takes AG, IB or other classes that are more difficult than the norm. Sort of like separating the wheat from the chaff.

Me neither. Of course, there’s good reason that I wouldn’t know ho high GPAs go.

They give another point for advance placement courses. I had a niece who graduated high school with most of her freshmen year classes waived. Not a horrible plan.

I’ve heard of schools tacking on 1.0 points to the 4.0 scale for honors/A.P. courses. And some schools add 0.333 points for a ‘+’ (and subtract 0.333 for a ‘-’). If that’s what’s going on, to get 5.31, this kid may have had nearly straight A+ in all honors/A.P. courses.

a “better way to recognize students who may have barely missed being named valedictorian or salutatorian by several decimal places,"

That's the difference of one child taking one slightly harder course than the rest, or doing one more extra credit than the rest.

One would think that if we're talking about the top three or four performers at the school, then they (of all people) would understand the worthlessness of participation awards, and would rather congratulate the winner for an achievement well-deserved.

They should do this in the Olympics!

Pull out those flags in the snow and let everybody come down however they want. Get rid of all the clocks, hurdles, running and skating lanes, put basketball hoops of various heights in different places, and have multiple soccer goals because of varying abilities, etc.
