Starbucks store in Manhattan cleverly gets around the "homeless" loitering problem

Posted on 06/23/2018 4:27:48 PM PDT by SamAdams76

There is a Starbucks near my office on 3rd Avenue and 48th Street in Turtle Bay (NYC) that I occasionally go to. I know most people here hate the Starbucks but this particular one is not that loathsome. The people working there are extremely friendly and recognize me right away. They always know I want the medium Pike Roast (and I drink it black).

So before people respond to say how Starbucks has "burnt coffee", let me say that I know! And I don't mind the taste of "burnt coffee" especially when it is super hot and black as can be.

Anyway, it has been a while since I've been in this one as a Gregory's coffee opened up right downstairs from my office and I've become partial to their coffee. But I still have about $15 on a gift card I got last Christmas so decided to drop in there yesterday.

Right away, I noticed that there was zero seating at this Starbucks. See picture I took below. They still got the little tables but the bench running along the wall and the few chairs have completely disappeared and the entire wall has some kind of mural on it now. Maybe the mural was there before but I never noticed it until now. Definitely however, the seating (which would accommodate at least 10 people) is completely gone. So I guess that is one way to solve the problem of "homeless" hanging out there and stinking up the place.

Can't say I blame the store for doing that. Who wants to have non-paying bums hanging around because the virtue signalers at HQ deemed that they be welcomed with open arms?

Anyway, just thought I'd post about it. Down below, I'll post a photo on Yelp of the same store but with the bench. You can't see the bench in the photo but clearly you can see that people are seated. Which is not possible anymore with the new layout.

Lastly, there are rumors of Black Rifle Coffee taking on some franchises in the NYC area. Can't wait for a BRC store to hit Manhattan. When it does, I'll be sure to post about it here.

Back when the same store had seating...

I can still go in the bathroom to wash my underwear in the sink.

This one doesn't have a public bathroom either.

NYC is not public-bathroom friendly. The nearest publicly available bathrooms I'm aware of in my area are over at Grand Central and they are nasty as hell.

H’mmmm, without chairs where will those who have disabilities that keep them from standing for prolonged periods be served and permitted to consume their coffee?

Isn’t that racist?

If they just served Covfefe, things would be peachy.

Have never been in a Starbucks but I know retired men hang out for morning kibitzing and pictured bigger tables to congregate around. Maybe different areas - different states have different setups?

Interesting. But it’s probably still a losing proposition. No seats means no bums. But it will also drive away customers who like to sit down and read the paper over a cup of coffee.

I wonder...are these Starbucks company stores, or are they locally owned? Because if I owned a local Starbucks store, I’d look into getting out of my contract and going independent.

I try to de-escalate every encounter with bums by directing them to two Starbucks within walking distance, assuring them they can take a table, go into their restrooms and take a bath or wash out their things. And if they’re black, telling them they can get free coffee and other race-card related stuff there.

I would rather get a cup of coffee from a gas station than Starbucks overpriced nasty crud. I would love to see all of them close.

Good idea. HOWEVER, just like Starbucks and the Coffee Bean I go to (they know me as a customer personally), the problem is the MENS ROOM.

The homeless use it even without buying. My Coffee Bean has the same issue—non paying customers use it. The Starbucks across SB I heard STOPPED giving away the MENS room CODE unless you show receipt.

No, ordering coffee “black” is racist.

Liberals ruined the public parks by getting rid of vagrancy laws, loitering laws, and not letting cops roust bums off park benches and out of doorways.

Now liberals have moved their destruction to businesses — you can’t sit at a table and enjoy your (slightly burned) coffee.

What’s next on the liberal ruination program?

So because you don’t like what they sell, you are a proponent of closing them down and putting thousands out of work. Are you a Berkeley college professor?

Traveling in Europe I don’t recall a free rest room anywhere inside a store or cafe.
Always had to pay about 50 cents to the washerwoman or attendant in the restroom. They sure were clean though.

Most places in Europe don’t understand “free,” like a free second cup of coffee, etc.

Exactly, that is the whole enchilada right there. I really don’t give a squat about the Starbucks/political/ PC crap, it isn’t worth any time of my day. When not at home and want a good cup of coffee I don’t go to Starbucks. They can sink or swim without me and that’s as far as it goes. That being said, if anyone enjoys Starbucks, go ahead with whatever makes you happy.
