The findings are reported in the April 19, 2018 online issue of PLOS One.
The scientists studied a cohort of 903 healthy adults (mean age: 74) with no indications of either pre-diabetes or diabetes during clinic visits from 1997 to 1999, and then followed the participants through 2009. Vitamin D levels in blood were measured during these visits, along with fasting plasma glucose and oral glucose tolerance.
"We found that participants with blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D that were above 30 ng/ml had one-third of the risk of diabetes and those with levels above 50 ng/ml had one-fifth of the risk of developing diabetes," said first author Sue K. Park, MD, in the Department of Preventive Medicine at Seoul National University College of Medicine in South Korea.
To reach 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels of 30 ng/ml, Garland said would require dietary supplements of 3,000 to 5,000 international units (IU) per day, less with the addition of moderate daily sun exposure with minimal clothing (approximately 10-15 minutes per day outdoors at noon).

True, might be fat people with diets low in vitamin D who don’t get enough sun and have other risk factors.
But correlation and causation sometimes do coincide, ;-)
Interesting... I take 2000 iu’s daily in addition to some sun exposure.
I think diabetes has more to do with the daily consumption of animal products and processed foods than lacking Vitamin D.

Statin drugs -> less cholesterol -> cholesterol is used in skin to make vitamin D -> less vitamin D produced -> greater health problems
We take 4,000 units of D3 per day along with K2 to prevent osteoporosis but I think you are right about the processed food. We stay away from that as well as soda pop and high sugar desserts. Type 11 diabetes is usually overweight and diet. My BIL would likely not have half his health problems if he would just shed 60 lbs and walk around the block and give up the choritzo sausage every morning.
Yes Vitamin D3 is very important!
I would add Vitamin C, E (mixed tocopherols), B (Complex), nascent iodine and high alkaline water will take you a long way.

Only during 10-2pm in direct sunlight (no glass) will your skin produce vit D. The high energy UV-b spectrum which produces vit D is easily blocked so just letting sunlight fall on your skin is not enough.
Vitamin D is actually a steroid and needed for a lot of different things. One of the most important is immune system activation. People with chronically low vitamin D tend to fall sick more and are more likely to get cancer because of a suppressed immune system - and ironically even skin cancer! Google vitamin D melanoma.
No one seems to mention the greater risk for stroke and heart disease from diabetes. Diabetes is a real killer.

Amen! Decades ago every dermatologist in 50 mile radius declared war on any sunshine.
They wanted everyone to put on sun screen, long sleeve shirts and huge hats before they went into the sun.
Orthopedic docs said, “Thanks, we now have an insured group patients with brittle bones to keep us in business.
Now we are finding out that Diabetes can be a result of not enough Vitamin D.
Unless you are allergic to the sunshine, get 15 to 30 minutes a day without your skin blockers, hats, and long sleeved tops.
