'Chicken of the Trees': People are eating iguanas in Florida
NEWS 5 CLEVELAND ^ | 01 JULY 2018 | Mary Stringini

Iguanas are an invasive species in Florida and experts have seen an increase in population over the last several years. Whether it's to help with population control, or if people just find them down right tasty, reports have been popping up across the state about people eating iguanas.

South Florida resident Brittany Peters is one of those people. "I like to promote eating what you harvest and know a lot of people kill iguanas since they are a nuisance, and I wanted to cook and eat them hoping to encourage those who kill them to also eat them," she told ABC Action News.

SOMEONE has to have PhotoShop skills to make a “Chicken Of The Trees” tuna can with Charlie Iguana.

I am not that person but I can see it my mind’s eye.

I would definitely try to eat a properly prepared iguana. Been waning to eat alligator for a long time.

The most exotic thing I’ve ever eaten was ostrich loin. And, no, it didn’t taste like chicken. It looked and tasted like beef. Very tasty.

I suspect there may be a lot of small delicate bones to remove in an Iguana. They both slither and crawl with great speed and flexibility. Such movement would require a strong ‘armature’ or bone structure, but it must also be lightweight, sort of like with large nesting birds.

They are a delicacy in many of the Carribean islands. A few years ago I was reading that there was a shortage in some of the areas and they had to import them from other islands.

Ostrich is freakin’ delicious. DELICIOUS! What’s not to like about a giant bird made out of steak?

Gator to me is as chewy rubbery as it looks. I’ll take a pass on the iguana too however if it was the only food available i’d partake of it charbroiled.

Wish I was in Tijuana -
Eating barbecued iguana
I’d take requests on the telephone
I’m on a wavelength far from home
I feel the hot wind on my shoulder
I dial in, south of the border
Hear the talking of the DJ -
Can’t understand, what’s he say?
I’m on the Mexican radio
I’m on the Mexican radio

Reptiles as a whole are pretty easy to clean. A lot depends on the size. The larger ones would be comparable to cleaning any small game bird, while the little ones would be more akin to sunfish, though they don’t have pinbones.

Most animals are similar in anatomy unless you’re in Australia—God seems to have populated that continent to confound our petty nomenclature system.

Beat me to it - cool song, cooler video.
Not a big fan of eating reptiles, though - had snake and 'gator - nothing to write home about.

“Gator to me is as chewy rubbery as it looks.”

I think it’s succulence or lack thereof depends largely on how it’s prepared. Not saying that from personal experience, but from watching cooking competition shows.

I worked with a guy who had a Pet iguana and brought in a picture. Another co-worker who grew up in Trinidad was very interested, claimed they were very good to eat. The picture was quickly put away :)
