Greenpeace activists flew a Superman-shaped drone into the no-fly zone around a French nuclear plant on Tuesday before crashing it against the building to highlight the facility’s lack of security.
The drone, piloted by one of Greenpeace’s activists, slammed into the tower in Bugey nuclear plant, about 20 miles from the eastern city of Lyon, the group said in a video.
“This action again highlights the extreme vulnerability of this type of buildings, which contain the highest amount of radioactivity in nuclear plants,” Greenpeace said, according to Reuters.
The environmental group, which also crashed a tiny radio-controlled plane into the facility, said the aircrafts were harmless. They targeted the facility’s spent-fuel pool building, which can hold the equivalent of several reactor cores in concrete pools outside the highly reinforced reactor building.

I wish they would try this in Russia, Iran, China or any other country that does not play ball.
Okay, they shouldn’t do this. Still, they have a pretty valid point and I do hope the French increase their defenses around these plants.
Maybe we should too.

Most U.S. reactor domes were built with six-foot thick reinforced concrete, at least way back, IIRC. They could withstand the impact of a medium-sized commercial jet back then (this was when the 707 and 727 were the standard).

Thanks BBell. Now if they had been jihadists, and burned down Notre Dame, nothin' would be done. But the breeder reactor system built by France is a source of national pride. /s

Not even zero emissions is good enough.
These people are hopeless.
France has the most advanced nuclear power programs and support on the planet.
I think they get 80% of their power from nuclear.
Plus, unlike us...they reprocess spent fuel and then feed it back into the reactor.
Just don’t hang around and go water skiing after you pull off an awesome stunt like sinking a boat.

I can remember when a kid from Iceland or Sweden flew a plane from his home nation and landed it in Red Square Moscow. If there is a will, there is a way. In the future the video game kids will be in charge of the military.

I’m pretty sure he was German. I know a lot of head’s rolled at The Kremlin after that happened and it was a real time learning experiences for the Soviets.
I never liked the French very much, especially when they wouldn’t give us over-fly rights when Reagan wanted to bomb Libya in the 80’s. They did gain my respect and admiration though when they blew up Greenpeace’s Rainbow Warrior in 1985.
