Elvis Presley - An American Trilogy - Aloha from Hawaii

Aloha from Hawaii Via Satellite is a concert that was headlined by Elvis Presley, and was broadcast live via satellite on January 14, 1973. The concert took place at the Honolulu International Center (HIC) in Honolulu (now known as the Neal S. Blaisdell Center) and aired in over 40 countries across Asia and Europe (who received the telecast the next day, also in primetime). Despite the satellite innovation, NBC did not broadcast an edited version of the concert in the United States until April 4, 1973 because the concert took place the same day as Super Bowl VII. The decision paid off handsomely for the network, attracting 51 percent of the television viewing audience to become NBC’s highest rated program of the year.[2] Viewing figures were estimated to be between 1 and 1.5 billion viewers worldwide: more people than saw man landing on the moon. The show was the most expensive entertainment special at the time, costing $2.5 million.[1]

I remember watching this via satellite when living in Alaska. I could be wrong, but I think it’s the first thing we had seen live up there. Even regular programming ran a few hours late because tapes were flown up from Seattle. This Elvis concert was a huge event! I won’t forget it.

When I was 16 to 26 (1975 -1985) I was in a band called Jade 50’s out of Chicago. We were a nostalgia band, we actually got to be the back up band for the Dick Clark Rock and Roll Shows and when Dick Clark came to the Midwest were were the band. But whenever we played by ourselves at music festivals or college towns we did an Elvis segment where my older brother would impersonate Elvis and one of the songs we did was An American Trilogy. The audience would go nuts. Then Elvis died and Elvis impersonators came out of the woodwork and we stopped doing that part of the show. But we did get to play in front of some huge crowds, 40,000 to 70,000 people. It was fun while it lasted, but then reality set in and you realize they’re not there to see you, they’re there to see Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, and all the other on the play bill....

I remember watching this show the first time it was on with all my siblings and parents on our new color counsel TV. Elvis never looked or sounded better than he did on this night. What a performer and what a voice.

“What neither Elvis nor his fans knew at the time was that, throughout his client’s touring career and in spite of vast sums he was being offered, Parker habitually turned down all offers of international tours because he was in fact an illegal immigrant, and feared that if he tried to leave the country he would be exposed, and might be deported back to his native Holland.”

Come to think of it, Elvis not touring Europe is very strange. I think you’re right.

The only time he played overseas was when he was in the Army stationed in Germany. He actually didn’t stay very long in his barracks. He rented a few rooms at two different hotels and then rented a house and some of his musician friends flew over and sometimes they would have a gam session at eh house and allegedly thye went up on stage at a local bar and sang a couple of songs.

I love singing American Trilogy. I often wonder who put it together. Elvis? I once heard some southern girl or other say about it:”Ah seen that song make good ol’ boys put down their chicken”...

Parker completely mismanaged Elvis’ career, but Elvis was too loyal to fire him. “Colonel Tom made me a star.”

Same with the Beatles. They would have lasted at least ten more years with Brian Epstein.

Tom Parker was a greedy coward that cost Elvis dearly. His songs did make it to Europe but with zero live shows which were his strength.
Arlo Guthrie unwittingly illustrates this point well ...

That made me cringe: genuinely uncomfortable to watch.
