Mayor Kenney faced a backlash from progressives after police officers on Thursday bike-dozed a modest encampment of protesters trying to shut down access to a local office for the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The mayor, who has held plenty of high-profile news conferences in City Hall to decry President Trumps zero tolerance on immigration, was nowhere to be found as police officers used bikes to push down beach umbrellas and other encampment equipment.
Kenney spokeswoman Deana Gamble said the mayor shared activists frustration with ICE. However, she said, protesters cannot obstruct access to the ICE building at Eighth and Cherry Streets.
ICEs aggressive tactics, their separation of families, their targeting of law abiding immigrants are cruel, Gamble said in a statement. While [Kenney] agrees with the premise of the protest, he cannot make exceptions to the law and allow individuals to create a threat to public safety by blocking access to a building and setting up permanent encampments.
In the wee hours of Friday morning, some anti-ICE activists even showed up at Kenneys front door: They set up an occupation outside City Hall, with chairs and a sign that read ICE IS ROUNDING UP PEOPLE IN A SANCTUARY CITY ICE GET OUT.

Next a helicopter will drop a bomb on them.
In the old days, those would have been mounted police. People get out of the way of horses. They do not get out of the way of bicycles. In fact, everyone I know giggles when they see a cop with a bike.
Horses do work better though. They are still widely used in NOLA. Even the drunks get out of the way.
Naahhhh, today the city would go backrupt with the legal actions to follow!
I, for one, thought the video was fantastic!
I don’t know what these guys are sit-in protesting... our Immigration and Customs Enforcement people, the entire department, or the laws?
Do they want us to get rid of the entire department? That’s all shades of stupid, right there. Protecting the country’s border is actually a requirement, is it not? (Hint, it is).
The group cites Section 4, Article 4 of the U.S. Constitution, which states:
The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.
I remember when they were called INS (immigration and naturalization service), but it doesn’t seem like any of these immigrants want to naturalize here, just bring their failed policies from where ever they’re from with them, whoever they are.
“Next a helicopter will drop a bomb on them.”
That’s only when there are kids in the house!
"separation of families"? When these migrant invaders send their unaccompanied children across the border the "separation" is voluntary on their part...
"law abiding immigrants"? I have not seen a single instance of a law-abiding immigrant being cruelly targeted, deported or anything else (except earning and being awarded citizenship in the U.S)...
I pressed the like button.
“Officer, may I suggest using your flamethrower?”
The NOLA PD still uses mounted police and I’d bet serious money a big reason is crowd control in the Quarter.
Sometimes they have no choice. I was just a teen in 1948 when I saw the NYC police breakup a May Day melee. The mounted cops came in parallel to the mob and then had the horse use his rear end to shove the people aside.
I saw foot police club a couple of women who were wearing big floppy hat and asked my dad why they did that. He said the women had big pins to hold their hats on and used them to stick the horses. (They were Communists.)
It made me laugh
