Travis Pastrana attempts infamous jump that almost killed Evel Knievel

Travis Pastrana honored legendary daredevil Evel Knievel Sunday night in attempting three of Knievel’s most dangerous jumps in a row on Evel Live. Pastrana wasn’t just setting out to complete the stunts, however, but to break Knievel’s records.

Pastrana’s epic act started with the 50 Car Jump, followed by the Wembley Bus Jump. It ended with the infamous Caesars Palace Fountain Jump — a stunt that almost killed Knievel 50 years ago. “This is the most iconic jump in stunt lore,” Pastrana said. “In the history of stunts, this is the one. It’s the one because Evel never landed it.”

He did the jump with a bike that was as close to Evils as they could get it.

That being said, me thinks Travis had a much better motor in this bike than Evil did.

Mike, Frank, Dani, Rick, Big Hoss, Chumlee, Danny, Kevin, Roli, and Dale were hopefully there, too!

Yup, modern equipment makes it look easy. But one other equipment difference is the size of the brass .... spheres. Evel Kneivel’s were so big they definitely weighted him down and probably caused him to lose a foot or two of lift but he didn’t care.

I kept wondering why Johnny Knoxville was there. He also looked like he was confused as to why he was there.

“I’m guessing that the major difference here is that the old way was seat of the pants, “hope this works” style. I’d bet serious money that this was all gamed out and simulated on computers that included every variable...”

Very true.

This is amazing 8mm fan footage of an Evel jump. The good stuff starts at 3:59. Watching Evel tear down the dragstrip while doing his Iron Horse Catwalk is amazing. The jump itself looks pretty easy for Evel, but you can tell his ramps were nowhere near what Travis Pastrana used last night.

They also did a three hour piece on Evel Knievel on the same day.

It’s better than it used to be. The Evel specials were hours long too.

Hell, I remember the entire day spent with Dick Clark before the release of Pac-Man.

Yes. I agree. 3 hour show to see three jumps. I figured out the trick - only watch the last 5-10 minutes of each hour. Travis was quite disciplined. Glad it all went well for him.

Pastrana will be jumping on an Indian. Which must be a one-off because last I looked, Indian wasn’t selling any jumping bikes.

It’s a brilliant marketing move, both on Pastrana’s part and on Polaris/Indian’s. But it’s still not nearly as primitive as the Trumpet that Knievel jumped at Caesar’s. And I guarantee you Travis’s ramps will be designed from computer models, not RCK’s “Kentucky windage.” Because he’s retired from the X-Games precisely because his body is no longer “crash-friendly,” so he’ll be taking every possible precaution to keep the rubber side down.
