BELTON, Texas (KWTX) Investigators have identified three teenagers who were involved in flinging a cat into Lake Belton after a short video of the incident went viral on social media.

The video, which first appeared on Snapchat, was posted on Twitter Monday night by a user who tagged both Belton police and the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Belton police identified the three teens involved in the incident and then referred the case to the Bell County Sheriff’s Department for further investigation, sheriff’s Maj. T.J. Cruz said Wednesday.

“The case has been assigned to an investigator with the sheriff’s department, who will review the case starting today and will be interviewing parties involved in this incident,” Cruz said.

“When the investigation is completed the appropriate referrals to juvenile authorities will be made,” he said.

No names were released.

The video doesn’t show what happened after the cat landed in the water.

"Did it knock the breath out of it? Did it have a hard time, did it drown because it couldn't breathe? You don't know those things,” Don Bland, the executive director of the Waco Humane Society, said Tuesday.

“So there are so many things on their own, so many different levels that are disturbing for the animal but then it's really hard wrenching to see young kids that are that cruel,” he said.

“These actions are not OK and will not be tolerated,” the individual who posted the video on Twitter told KWTX.

When someone abuses an animal the punishment should be to do to the perp(s) what they did to the animal.

In is case I might add some baseball bat beating when they are in the bag.

Yet another example of the collapse of moral and spiritual values. The school shootings are the most egregious examples of this. Kids have no value for life and views others as just something to use for their entertainment.

Man, if they knew what I did to a few animals when I was very young...

Hopefully the statute of limitations kicks in on this for me. And to quote a Facebook meme, “I’m glad I did all my stupid stuff before the internet existed.”

Is it a feral cat or someone’s pet. Did they steal someone’s property. Obviously they are jerks. Torture of animals for fun is not ok, I agree. There are humane ways to get rid of feral cats (if it was feral). It’s hard to tell if cats have owners because cat owners let their cats roam around.

I think in this case it’s an example of everything being shared. There are 330+ million people in the US. I’ve seen plenty of videos of people doing all sorts of stupid stuff, including getting themselves killed. It’s nothing new. What’s new is that there is now always a camera around and someone to post the video.

This kind of stuff has been going on as long as there have been ‘bad’ kids. But the advent of the internet and the current generation’s selfie posting fetish makes it more visible.

>>i.e. a dog = a boy<<

No — let the punishment fit the crime.”

A boy has a LOT more chance to defend himself than a dog or a cat does. The fact animals are, for the most part COMPLETELY defenseless factors in greatly.

I guess you like to torture animals and support this act?

This.

It’s AWESOME that our culture has become so non-violent that Cops have so much fee time that they can even spend time on protecting and serving animals because there is nothing else to do..

I’d love to meet these miserable parodies of humans. They’d get to meet a variety of my garden tools.

Oh please. Only an idiot doesn’t know what happens to a cat after he’s thrown in the water. He swims! My wife used to own one of the few cats I’ve ever seen that actually liked to get into the water. my hard-earned tax-payer dollar gets paid to police to do way more than deal with this.

Cruelty and torture of animals is never OK. People are usually next on the menu. Medieval punishment fits the crime.

Sorta my point too. It's bad. It's worth noting and looking to see if there is a track record for these boys. Any indication that they are future serial killers or are going to shoot up a school? OK.

In the old days, they should be taken home to fathers that whoop their buts (yes spanking or other harsh punishment).

I hate that cops and detectives and courts are going to used for this type of "enforcement" of the law.

I agree.

But because, for me, a dog (or cat) does not equal a boy, the punishment for being cruel to a cat should not be equal to the punishment for being cruel to a boy.

I don’t think I should be executed for putting out an anti-freeze laced steak for the neighbors dog that keeps tearing up my yard, even after multiple complaints to the dogs owner.*

*I’ve never done that or needed to, but it was a relatively common thing back when I was a kid (50’s through 60’s).

I guess it’s just that my generation tends to draw a huge line of demarcation between the value of a human being and an animal. Heck, We eat the latter. Eating the former is strongly discouraged.

If the extent was throwing a cat into a lake, I can think of a lot worse things that people do to animals. At least cats can swim. I’ve known a guy who catches neigbors’ cats and throws them out of his vehicle on a busy interstate highway.

Kinda funny how people are so incensed by cruel treatment of animals that they are triggered to commit cruel treatment of their own.

Kids do stupid sh!t all the time. They also fall prey to peer pressure. Is this normal for them or is this an anomaly? Kind of important to know in order to determine the correct punishment. I hope this is a one time thing, they are remorseful, the cat lives, and they would never do it again. But I’m not really ready to hang them just yet.
