We’re on the same page.
One thing for me too, is that your world view determines how you interpret this sort of thing. Those that see animals as “almost human” imagine the boys having their sensibilities. That is, a person that would do this to an animal is just a serial killer in training.
But those of us who were raised on farms or otherwise understand that animals and humans are nowhere near the same thing, understand how a boy, with our sensibilities, would not equate the action with doing it to a human any more than they would equate carving their initials in a tree to carving them in a person’s forehead.
It doesn’t make what the boys did right, but I suspect a lot of animals have sacrificed life and limb teaching boys empathy. I remember, in sixth grade, getting a BB gun and shooting a robin right in the chest. It fell out of the tree in front of me and I felt TERRIBLE. Never did it again. Never even thought about doing it again. And 50+ years later it leaves a mark.
But now, I didn’t need jail time.
It’s torture to throw a cat in the water?
Bravo. Kids do STUPID things. It's how we learn. The last thing we need is people telling us that every time someone does something stupid or thoughtless to an animal that they're a future serial killer.
SAME! I had an exact same experience. That bird was on a power line a LOOOONG way away. I never expected to be able to hit it. It dropped off that power line without flinching. I was immediately horrified. First I felt bad for the bird. Then I thought about what trouble I was in when my parents found out. Then I had the stress of deciding not to tell anyone.... Lesson learned. I haven't killed anything but pests and food since.
I had been told by my parents, we were only allowed to shoot the sewer cats in the fields (they were aggressive and mean) and the muskrats in the creek. No other animals. LOL.
Did you ever squish a bug on purpose that was doing you no harm when you were a kid? Did you ever swat a fly that wasn't hurting you? Did you ever take a worm and put it on a hook and go fishing? I think you see the point. Not every cruel action done to an animal means that the kid or person is another serial killer.
Studies show that serial killers often tortured animals as a child! (And other studies have shown that young teens are idiots!)
I rented a cottage on a farm after college. I was looking at the new kitten, and the young daughter asked her dad something like “So she only had one kitten?”
“Yes - honey - just the one.”
I gave an odd glance to the dad. After the girl left I said “Just one kitten?”
“Well - that’s all she needs to know. Every year the cats’ have one baby, maybe two if a friend wants one. The rest get put in a gunny sack and dumped into the pond.”
My shocked expression caused him to add “We already have a ton of cats around. We aren’t in the city - that’s how we do things.”
I wouldn’t call it torture - but perhaps not the most humane way to kill them. But farmers do have another outlook on things. I was helping a relative out on a ranch and the dog was only using three legs - but could still work those cows.
I asked about his hurt leg.
“Yeah - it got broke.”
“Oh - the vet couldn’t fix it?”
“The vet!? Who’s got time for that? It healed on it’s own.” (Or something very plain and crass like that)
I was pretty surprised, seeing as how well that dog handled the cattle. I would have thought he would have taken better care of such a great “asset”.
Great analogy if your a moron
Chain a cinder block too them.
All well and good, but these three should be required to work at an animal shelter for a couple of months to drive the lesson home ...
I pushed my cat into the water once when he was drinking out of the toilet. Am I evil?
3rd degree felony in Texas that can get them 2-10 years and a $10,000 fine.
Not so funny now is it kids?
Show me someone who hurts animals for fun and I’ll show you someone who should be watched as a sociopath for the rest of their life. useless little bastards, beat the crap out of ‘em and keep them on a police watch list forever.
I think there is a major problem with a lack of empathy now. People are basically crappy until they learn that abuse isn’t just a thing that happens/is inflicted on others. I hope the cat got through this, poor kitty.
Do you know how many ‘feral’ cats are just strays, lost or dumped? Once out in the wild, most become very afraid and ppl think it’s totally wild. They are dependent on people...ALL OF THEM feral or not. MOST of the ‘so called ‘feral’ cats that I have fed in colonies over the last 20+ yrs turn out friendly..it’s just a matter of trust. They are all now known as COMMUNITY cats (stray, lost, homeless, feral, dumped) because they deserve a life too.
Thank God for the cameras, because now we can identify sociopaths and the next school shooters.
Agreed - completely agreed.
Anyone who likes torturing animals is a piece of filth.
- and whomever equated stepping on a bug to the same thing needs their head examined.
I worked on dairy farms growing up, we had pigs, chickens, horses etc. The pigs were headed to the slaughter house every year and as teenagers we knew that. Took them to the most humane slaughter house we knew of.
But the idea of hurting a defenseless animals for fun? How is that fun?
Cats don’t have owners.
Cats have employees....
Kids that torture animals grow up to be adults that torture people.
