NATO Summit: Poland pins its hopes on the USA
DW ^ | July 11, 2018

Polish people love America

Poland wouldn't mind seeing Trump as the advocate of Eastern European interests in Brussels. It's not just about a stronger NATO presence, but also about history and shared values. Many Poles see it as a given that the US should be responsible for their security, as the country suffered at the hands of neighboring Germany and Russia in the past and feels cheated by other European states.

The PiS government agrees wholeheartedly with Trump's climate and migration policies, as well as criticism of the German-Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project. And there are concrete economic interests, too: Poland buys US aircraft interceptor systems and liquefied natural gas, the latter in hopes to decrease its dependency on shipments from Russia.

There is a bit of uneasiness with regard to the fact that during the election campaign Trump called NATO obsolete, and the sure knowledge that the US president meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin right after the NATO summit. But it doesn't shake Poland's great sympathy for the US and the people's belief that America represents safety and stability.

They are putting their money where there mouth is, spending a lot on refurbishing their armed forces, offering the US $2 billion to relocate forces from Germany to Poland, and organizing a district-by-district militia.

Poland has some of the same stupid laws that most EU countries have about rifles and pistols: must be a member of a gun club, store the weapon at the range not at home, etc.

With one funny exception: they have something like a "curios and relics" license. With one of those, you can get any weapon that was -designed- more than 50 years ago and keep it at home. I read over 300,000 Poles have now gotten the license and are forming volunteer local militias that will now receive formal training from the armed forces under a new law.

Wow 2 whole billion. And they want our sons and daughters to be a trip wire aka south Korea. No thanks. Btw why do Poles, who are a wonderful people, naturally expect we will defend them carte blanche???

They do not: they’re asking to be our allies because they are on the front line with Russia. Their GDP is 1/20 of ours, so that $2 billion for us is $40 billion to them. And that’s not counting their increases for their own defense.

I'm all for supporting the Poles. They know what it's like to live under totalitarianism and they seem to genuinely like America.

Believe me that nobody in Poland think that any third state would fight for our freedom. In fact this is your government that want to keep troops in Europe for various reasons. Polish say that if Americans want to keep troops in Europe anyway then why not in Poland? If you want troops our of Europe then complain to your politicians.

Oy vey! Somehow you don't seem to have any problem with my spendings on your “war and terror”.

Anyway, that's not really “many Poles” but the current gov, which apparently can't figure out anything better regarding national security than bringing foreign military in. “Many Poles” actually know better.

Poland should be responsible for Poland's security. If they're willing to take the job seriously, I don't object to helping them. They're the good guys.

I favor the adaptation of Piłsudski's original Intermarium idea. An alliance of Central European states, independent of the EU and Moscow.

Poland found out in 1939 what happens when you make other countries responsible for your security.
