SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) - The San Francisco Police Department arrested a serial rapist who allegedly disguised himself as a rideshare driver to prey upon victims.

Authorities say Orlando Vilchez Lazo, 37, would wait outside local bars posing as a rideshare driver.

The victims would enter Lazo's vehicle which they believed was the rideshare car they requested.

Police say the victims were taken to other locations and sexually assaulted.

"On July 7, investigators observed suspicious behavior from a driver in what looked like a rideshare vehicle, according to police.

Officers stopped the vehicle, identified the driver and took his DNA, police said."

I hope the activity was more than just suspicious, or else that DNA swipe might not be admissible.

The victims would enter Lazo's vehicle which they believed was the rideshare car they requested.

The apps clearly identify the make, model and color of the car that will be picking you up, along with the license plate number and even a small picture of the driver. If you're so drunk that you can't even make out these details before you jump into a car, you don't need a ride home - you need help for your alcoholism.

How hammered were these victims that they didn’t know he was driving a different route than to their destination? And, getting into a vehicle without the license plate they should be looking for? Some people just live life with their eyes closed and walk into trouble. I’m sure this clown is probably an illegal, too. Probably will be released by SF’s sanctuary city government.

There is a reason taxis are painted particular colors (color scheme) with giant numbers visible from a distance, medallion clearly displayed, taxi light, meter, cc machine, big required stickers, etc. so even drunks can realize it’s really a cab.

Anyone can make a xerox of an Uber symbol and put it in their back windowed their car.

It would be far more difficult and expensive to make your car look like a taxi. Also the other cabbies in town would quickly turn you in as a fake cab.

Didn’t everyone see that coming a mile away?

Again, the apps clearly show the make, model, color and license plate number of the car that will pick a passenger up. I just used Uber yesterday evening at SFO to get home to the South Bay - black Toyota Prius, license plate number and driver name were all shown in the app and that’s what I looked for, in the midst of lots of other Uber and Lyft cars picking people up at the international terminal. If anything, you get much better traceability with the ride-sharing apps than with taxis.

I know the apps show it. I also know that compromised people aren’t being proactive. They are vulnerable and trusting. There are reasons that taxis are marked the way they are.
