At least for the most part, by the mid-80s, the Vietnamese leaders realized that Communism doesn’t work, and now Vietnam is pretty much only Communist in name.
They did a survey of countries, and they found that amongst the population, that Vietnam was actually the most pro-Capitalist country on the planet, at least amongst the population.
True, but still run by the children of the northern communists. As for the South Vietnamese who supported us, those who could not escape were slaughtered. The war was reported by mediocre alcoholics who rarely left the roof of the Rex Hotel in Saigon. And many believe what they said.
If by “in name” you mean the party still maintains its monopoly on political power, its surveillance state and its coercive secret police power then you are correct.
