Cleaning Lady, Firefighters Hurt In Bee Attack

Firefighters say she had what appeared to be around 50 bees covering her body, including her face, Bommarito said.

There were as many as 80,000 bees in all involved in the attack...

Opting not to wait for special suits to protect them from the bees, the firefighters rushed in with a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher they typically use for grease fires, Bommarito said.

“They determined they needed to get that patient away from the bees, so they sprayed them with a carbon dioxide extinguisher and in the process all four got stung, two multiple times,” the captain said.

The woman – who officials had just arrived for work when she was attacked – was stung hundreds of times and transported to Saddleback Medical Center in critical condition

If you don’t know, when a bee stings you, she leaves a chemical marker that tells the other bees “sting here”. So the more you get stung, the more you will get stung. You need to get away from the hive which is what the bees are protecting. Most bees won’t chase you that far. What makes Africanized bees so dangerous is their willingness to chase you for long distances.

Wait for the sun to go down. Block all their exits. Stuff a garden hose in one of the exits. Pour half cup of gas down the garden hose. No more bees in 2 minutes.

Is it the same for wasps? I didn’t know wasps had built a nest in the upper corner of our sliding deck door. I headed to the clothes line with an armload of damp blankets and gave the door a hearty shove to open it-right into their nest.

I wasn’t halfway across the deck when I got the first sting on my face. Then it was my shoulders, arms and legs. I dropped the blankets and ran back in. They were everywhere.

I can’t imagine how how horrible it is to be attacked by killer bees. Wasps are bad enough.

Killer bee stings are pretty much the same as other honeybees. They are much more aggressive thus earning the nickname “killer” bees.

Can’t say for sure, but I’d be surprised if it weren’t. Big difference is that bees can only sting you once. Their sting is barbed and the bee disembowels herself trying to get away. Wasp stings are not barbed so one wasp can sting you many times.

My wasp story. Was at a party with friends in the country. They had an old school bell. I gave it a ring. Wasps, whose home I’d just rung didn’t like it. They pour out and I take off running. Now I guess it is human instinct to run towards ones friends, but when you are being chased by angry wasps, you have no friends. You are on your own.

Good on the firemen who put it on the line to save this woman. If they had waited, she would surely have died.

I’ve long wanted to set up a couple of hives, but, having a severe allergy to bee stings that’s not in the cards for me.

I saw a bee on the shoulder of the lady in front of me at the pharmacy checkout. I told her there was a bee on her shoulder and whacked it with a roll of plastic cups I saw. When it fell to the ground, I stomped on it. She might have been allergic to bees, who knows. I must say, that was the most unusual thing that happened that day.
