Debt-plagued Chicago becomes latest blue stronghold to consider free 'basic income'

Chicago may soon become the largest municipality in the U.S. to test a universal basic income program.

Chicago alderman Ameya Pawar recently proposed legislation that would provide 1,000 families with a $500 monthly stipend -- no questions asked. The bill already has the backing of the majority of city lawmakers, and Pawar hopes to soon work with Mayor Rahm Emanuel to implement the pilot program, The Intercept reported.

“Nearly 70 percent of Americans don’t have $1,000 in the bank for an emergency,” Pawar told the outlet. “UBI could be an incredible benefit for people who are working and are having a tough time making ends meet or putting food on the table at the end of the month.”

Stupid but also crafty. They want the remaining 30% to give (be relieved of) their bank accounts for the greater good of the socialist paradise on the way if taxes are just high enough soon.

Is this universal basic income, over and above, and on top of, all the public assistance benefits that these people receive?

Don’t we already have the social safety net, so that everyone in need gets some basic minimal level of public assistance?

Or do they want to give poorer people extra money?

Where is financially strapped Chicago going to get this money to pay this UBI?

Chicago sounds like a good place to “be from”.

Fine as long as IL does not get one damn dime of other states money through the federal government. This "test" has to be isolated to IL for it to be valid. It won't work of course but if IL is getting federal funding for anything then it's really the entire country who will be paying these 1000 people to do nothing.

Are the American people really this dumb?

No need to ask where it comes from because it's free. It dropped down out of the heavens like manna.

On the bright side, stunts like this pull more deadbeats to those cities, and chase away the conservatives. We can’t eradicate liberals, but we can gather then in a few select places where their electoral college load is lowered. If we can just get them all to California, Illinois, and New York, that’s 107 votes, tops.

Index this news away for safe storage, to be pulled out next time any city or state is looking for a federal bailout.

Stupid but also crafty.

Yes, indeed: Crafty!

Even though it would be infeasible to enact a full-scale program, it's the precedent effect that I'm worried about - the mere fact that a government body has taken it upon itself to redistribute wealth for redistribution's sake - with no pretense of the recipients being "needy" or suffering exceptional hardships.

I, myself, see strong parallels to those dystopic sci-fi films wherein "The Government" allows people to, e.g., commit murders on a particular night of the year. Or Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery," where only a single individual is "sacrificed" (for the "greater good?" - the story isn't clear on that point).

By launching a "pilot project," it is being tacitly claimed that the govt. can, in principle, take money from some people in order to simply "shower" it upon others - with no consideration of their actual need.

That is a dangerous precedent.

Regards,

So what product does Chicago produce that will pay for 1,000 people to get money they did not earn?

And when all of those people are still broke, but have nice new big-screen TVs?

A reminder that a city working its way from financial irresponsibility to bankruptcy is a danger to visitors as well as its own captive residents:

The problem is the Liberal Locust Syndrome. Once the Lefties screw-up one place, they leave for greener pastures. Then, the Progressives promptly make a pig’s breakfast of their new abode.

“Where is financially strapped Chicago going to get this money to pay this UBI?”

From the police and fire pension debts and doubling real estate taxes.

These days in western Michigan, it isn’t nearly unusual to see dozens of cars with Illinois plates in a given day, as they evacuate their sinking ship.

When I was a kid, it was big deal to see a plate from anywhere that wasn’t Michigan. Like it was an extraterrestrial driving through.

“Are the American people really this dumb? “

Approximately half are even dumber. In California about 60-65%.
